Help Me Fix A Laptop

About 2 weeks ago a lady came in to my job to buy a new laptop and replace her old one. She told me she was going to throw away the old one and I kindly asked if I could have it and she said yes

Its this model:

<<< System Summary >>>

> Name : Acer Aspire 5520

> Mainboard : Acer Fuquene

> Chipset : Athlon64/Opteron/Sempron (K8 Family) HyperTransport Technology Configuration

> Processor : AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-58 @ 1900 MHz

> Physical Memory : 1024 MB (1024 DDR2-SDRAM )

> Video Card : Nvidia Corp NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M

> Hard Disk : Hitachi (160 GB)

> DVD-Rom Drive : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17RS ATA Device

> Monitor Type : SAMSUNG - 15 inches

> Network Card : Nvidia Corp Nvidia Corp

> Network Card : Atheros Communications Inc AR5006 family 802.11abg Wireless NIC

> Operating System : Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Home Edition 6.00.6000

Now she upgraded because she said the computer was stuck in a reboot cycle and wouldn't even show the BIOS screen. I confirmed it and it turns out that this particular model is famous for it. Also famous was that it was fixable by baking the motherboard So after I stuffed the cooked motherboard back in and reassembled the entire thing, it worked!!!

Now, the only thing stopping me from having a nice laptop for school is the fact that it won't charge. We have a universal charger at home for my brothers and sisters laptop and just so happens that the pin used for that one fits this one. When I plug it in though, the battery charging light doesn't come on. I know its not the charger since it works for the other laptop. When I remove the battery and try to turn it on by way of just the charger it doesn't power on. But if I disconnect it and put the battery back in, it powers on. So its not the battery's fault either.

Any ideas on what I can do? Should I even attempt to take it to a computer shop? I got it for free I'd pay maximum $50 to get this fixed

That's usually the charging circuit in the mobo being blown, very rarely it's a bad battery... that is assuming you attached the power plug to the board firmly and completely (if it's a removable one).

NICE! what an awesome day at work that must have been

You didn't bake the whole thing did you? might be why it doesn't charge.

There might be a problem with the battery, try getting a replacement one from amazon and if it doesn't fix it, just return it and say your ordered it buy accident or it was the wrong one (amazon are really good at returns)

If that doesnt work just do what you did to get it working every time you boot up, but do it so it looks like your reloading the magazine in your gun....then all your worries have gone

you sure the wattage/amperage on the charger is sufficient? I've run in to finicky Laptops that batteries would only charge if you used exactly the same wattage/amp as the original charger

Yea, it is a removable one and I gave it a nice push in when reattaching the plug to the mobo. But maybe thats it. I'll see if I can find a spare one on ebay.

Naw, I know it isn't the charger. The thing I do know is that with the wrong wattage charger, your battery could explode
