New Toxic 6950, Weird Problem...

Thread Starter
Just got done w/ my build and was in the tweaking stage but ran into a weird issue last night. My new Sapphire HD 6950 Toxic was working out of the gate on BIOS 2. When I switched to BIOS 1, nothing displays on monitor but it appears that it's booting as normal. It's currently connected VGA from monitor to VGA-DVI connector on gfx card.

I'm confused why it was in BIOS 2 (the direction closest to the bracket) in the first place and why I get nothing on BIOS 1. I'll try a different cable or flash BIOS 1 but wanted to run it past you guys/gals first.

Hmmmm, just seeing this post ... I'll have to open up my case to check, but I could have sworn that when I got My TOXIC, Position #1 was toward the BACK PLATE Exhaust Bracket ... and then I flipped it to Position #2 toward the POWER Connectors to UnLock the 2nd Bios/shaders ? I think ... I'll double check what position I have it in now and report back soon.

I wouldn't FLASH anything on this card YET ... and even then I'd only Flash this card once the New Sapphire BIOS comes out that [H]ard|OCP was taking about being made public before too long that fixes the Power Tune throttle issue.

EDIT : OK, I opened her up ... and I was right, Position #2 to UnLock the 2nd Bios/shaders on MY card was TOWARD the Power Connectors, or AWAY from the BACK PLATE Exhaust Bracket.

Sounds like maybe you didn't following the suggested guidelines for UnLocking ? Read MY Step by Step Guide to UnLocking the TOXIC - http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/113...l#post15253189

This worked for me, and should be similar if not exactly the SAME for any HD-6950 w/ the DUAL BIOS switch that does not require the HARD FLASH to UnLock ...

And here's my post with LINKS to ALL the INFO you could ever want to read up on to educate yourself about UnLocking the Various 6950's - http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...l#post15267511
in case you need even more information, some cards of which WILL require FLASHING to UnLock, do so at your own risk!

GOOD LUCK

Actually I did follow your guide, to the T. I also saw another image that actually had numbers for position 1 and 2 that's why I thought it was in the 2 position. Either way, I went ahead and flashed it w/ the 6970 firmware from another poster here and it worked in position 2.

I'm all set. Thanks for ur time...

Wait ... so you COULDN'T UnLock your TOXIC via the DUAL BIOS SWITCH ... yet you WERE ABLE to FLASH a 6970 Bios onto the Position #2 bios slot and have FULL Shader AND Core/Mem unlock ?

It's GREAT that it worked out for you, but I find it an ODD set of facts, I would have figured if your Dual Bios Switch wouldn't have worked that your GPU chip must have been a Laser cut one, and thus a BIOS Flash wouldn't have worked either ? Yet you say it DID ?

I ask because I have a buddy that bought a TOXIC card off of how much I talked it up, but unfortunately he couldn't get his to Unlock via the Dual Bios Switch either ... so I would LOVE for what you're saying to be true, and that it could maybe work for him also ... would you mind taking a screen shot of TriXX and show me what you're working with ... and then also where you got the HD-6970 bios from ? you can PM it to me if you don't want that info public for now. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Oh, no problem. I may just be sucking @ effectively communicating but when I get home I'll post the before and after.

Hopefully clearer full story:

Bought 6950 Toxic after reviews and lots of thought and waiting for newegg to stock. Got the rest of my rig, see sig, and installed. Tried to stick a coin in front "lock" and realized it was just plastic and researched and found the actual switch. It was in the position towards the brackets. A 6950 pic lead me to believe that this was position 2. I may have been wrong here. When flipped to the other position, computer would boot but monitor would be black as if it had no connection. So, I booted in "position 1, closest to brackets", clicked switch to "position 2, away from brackets", flashed w/ ATIFlash, rebooted in "position 2" and the system came up fine.

Link w/ pic that confused me and instructions I followed to flash:
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159

Got BIOS from 6th post in the below thread:
http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/111...till-same.html

Took before and after pics and will upload when I get home tonite.

What do you mean ? looking at your SIG ... you did it with your Sapphire 6950 ?

I did too w/ my TOXIC ...

... OH, OK so I still had to OC the Memory Clock the get the extra 75MHz

But my question/confusion in DaSaint79's case ... was Why couldn't he UnLock his card via the BIOS Switch ? yet WAS able to FLASH unlock it ... I was under the impression that IF you couldn't UnLock it with the SWITCH it meant your GPU was Laser Cut and/or the 2nd BIOS was Disabled ? and you'd not be able to UnLock it via a FLASH either ? or was that wrong ?

Either I am wrong about it, as DaSaint79 just maybe proved, or DaSaint79 somehow didn't try the Switch UnLock properly and it WOULD have UnLocked if it was done correctly ?

I'm trying to find out like I said because I have a friend who bought a TOXIC and he can't seem to UnLock his ... and maybe he can FLASH it safely then to get the 6970 specs it looks like ?

well we only unlocked the shaders bro ^^ not the stock memory clock, not the bandwidth so!! its only a tweaked 6950 and not a real 6970. it dont recognize it as 6970 but as a 6950. that not a fully unlock

Like I said, if the BIOS switch entailed booting with the black switch in position 2 then yes, I did it properly. The machine didn't fail to post, it booted fine, I just couldn't see anything on the screen. The led on the monitor was amber. So I booted in position 1, switched to position 2 and flashed it. It booted fine after that. Sorry for the confusion...

...I do need to resolve the double post from cold boot issue though but that's just me being lazy. Now if I could just figure how CPU-Z works...
