Why not just water cooling it instead of running the risk of bricking the card that way?
Are you looking to replace your 560ti? If so, don't. An overclocked 560ti can reach 480 speeds.
No it will not help the temps.

And I don't know why people get so bent out of shape with these cards, mine runs cool on the stock cooler. Now mind you I have an aggressive fan profile where if its greater then 60c the fan runs at 100%.

But the card for me never has gone over 70c.

Only thing that will really get the temps down on the card though would be to put an aftermarket cooler on it.

I have a buddy running dual Evga 480s in his HAF 932 and no problems with cooling whatsoever. No water cooling, additional fans necessary. If that was the case, then Nvidia would've included additional fans for cooling the card. Mind you these cards are tested to run REALLY hot. No worries.

If you want to take the risk with the unlockable cards, do it. If you're not a gambling man, get the 480. It' quite a nice card.

If your talking about the ghetto cooler mods like on the GTX470' then it cant be done on the 480 as the cooler is slightly different.

The GTX470 can have shroud part removed and fans placed close by to get more air through the heatsink,i think thats what your referring too right?

EDIT:

anyway,if your just looking for Raw power with no pref to heat and power consumption then the GTX480 is for you as it is more powerfull than the 6950 and in BENCHMARKS pulls infront more times than a 6970 will, thats before we even mention the GTX480 will reward more with its overclock.
