Cheap Ultra 500w psu and 3870x2

My friend recently gave me his old gaming computer for free. It has a Ultra 500w psu, like one of the ones that comes with a ultra case, I understand that it is not the best psu, and that I should upgrade soon, but I have $50 and was offered a 3870x2, would the psu be able to run this videocard?

Probably LS- or LSP-500. Garbage. Kill it with fire.

Not worth investing money in a 3870x2, that oooold tech.

A PSU that cheap will probably put out <150W. No.

The 3870x2 is old, draws a lot of power, and runs hot, but for the price it's actually a decent performer.

I got to agree with Phaedrus, during the summer, pin mod the 24 pin and start the psu in your courtyard, it will be a very nice firework for you and your friends.

If the 3870 is free I'd say use it. Otherwise don't pay $50 for it, you can get something better IMO.

Yeah that PSU is crap. The 3870x2 is old but is still a good performer no doubt. If you aren't planning on running new DX11 games then I'd get it. But don't run it on that PSU. Do you have ANY others available?

What card can I get for $50, and what do you think about a 9800gt i just need it for tf2 and some other games
post #7 of 9
9800GT would be a better choice than the 3870x2. I think 3870x2 may squeeze by it a little in performance, but old dual GPU cards aren't well supported.

I wouldn't run either on that Ultra though. You might scrape by with the 9800GT, but... Get a better PSU.
