Overclocking ScanFX HD 6990

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm currently using a ScanFX HD 6990 which I have overclocked using the Catalyst Control Centre - AMD Overdriveâ„¢ feature.

I have the bios switch in the overclocked position and the card is using the following settings:

Clock: 920MHz
Memory: 1320MHz
Power Control Settings: +20

I just wanted to compare what other people are able to get out of this card. You can view more information about my system through my profile.

When I try going higher than 925MHz on the clock and running 3DMark 11, I can see little black artefacts on the second test and I thought that was probably an indication that I've reached the highest clock I could.

Many thanks in advance to anyone that can advise if I could be doing something to improve this. I'm planning to get a second HD 6990 at the end of this month for some quad GPU fun, but this is just to see what a single card can do. :-)

A 6990 on AUSUM BIOS 1.175v +20% would normally do 945/1400 MHz depends on your cooling capacity.

What you are seing on the second test probably instability CPU or RAM overclcok, doubt it because of the limit at 920/1320 MHz.

I don't know what steps you have done prior and after switching the BIOS switch. Select "Restore To Factory Default" from CCC upper right corner drop down menu. Also "Reset" Afterburner or whatever software for monitoring and overclocking. Restart PC then start the GPU OC and give it another try.

If you want to compare score, find one running identical platform. If you compare it with using CPU 980/990x will not give you a clear picture of your graphics score comparison.

Thanks for the response Ken. I'm pretty sure my CPU and RAM are stable though. I've been able to run Prime95 (64-Bit) using 90% RAM for 85 hours without any complaints.

I've also not used Afterburner, everything has been done in CCC using AMD Overdrive™. If I reset everything, should I use Afterburner to do the overclock with instead?

The reason to reset CCC is for the AUSUM BIOS settings to take effect. No, just stick with CCC Overdrive to find your stable clock. Using Afterburner might give you issues to solve before anything else. Try reset it first and find your stable OC @ 1.175v +20%, full load temperature maintain with fan speed not to go beyond 75-80°C.

Also use latest Catalyst 11.9 + Catalyst Application Profile (Catalyst 11.8 CAP5). I know Catalyst 11.9 CAP1 is out, but haven't got time to try it out. You can use Catalyst 11.9 CAP1 if you like.
