Building new "work" PC - Need some feedback

Thread Starter
Hey everyone!

I will get to the point quick. I am building a new "work" PC and I have all my parts picked out . This PC is being used for video encoding, burning and ripping along with streaming - no gaming. I just wanted to get some feedback and see if there's something I may be overlooking or maybe there's something someone else could suggest to help stretch my dollar further.

The set up I am currently using:

Q9300 - OC'd to 3.0
Asus P5Q-E
4gb geil 1066 ddr2
9600gt
lite-on dvd burner
lite-on bd-rom
4 500gb WD HDD
1 1tb WD HDD
1 1.5tb WD HDD
1 1tb Sam HDD

All these HDD are full with movies, music, tv shows.

Basically, this system has slowed down and has trouble converting, burning and ripping at the same time-that and I'm running out of room. Here's what I had in mind for my new build.

i7 2600K
MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)
Gskill Ripjaw series 1600 (16gb)
Will reuse optical drives
Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 64GB (boot only)
other HDD will be consolidated to bigger drives.
EVGA 012-P3-1571-KR GeForce GTX 570 HD

I have looked through countless blogs and looked over millions of graphs and intel just seems to be better for what I'm doing. Any suggestions?

looks pretty good. why the 570 if your not gaming? the cpu should handle what you need it to do, unless you have rendering in depth work.

build looks fairly good, what are you using for a PSU? GPU? Since you aren't gaming the 9600gt may be fine.

edit: also what are you using for CPU cooling?

I don't think a 570 will be useful if you aren't gaming unless your video encoding happens on the GPU. If you want a new card, then just use a 550 ti or just reuse your 9600gt, unless you want GPU accelerated encoding in which the 570 will get useful.

Also, which software do you use. Do you use advanced software like Premiere Pro or just simple conversion software like Handbrake.

To All-thanks for the replies!

I was just looking at upgrading to a better GPU with HDMI out that could support 1080 playback to my monitor because I do have a HD capture card that I (cough, cough) pull stuff my DVR... The 9600gt is just dual dvi out.

I am going to reuse my PSU (700W-from gaming pc)

I am also reusing my Zalman 9700- I did have to buy an adapter from zalman to fit the 1155 socket

As noted a 570 is overkill for your requirements.

I just picked up an Asus 6850 (AMD) for about $105.00 after rebate which makes an excellent card for a media PC (which is what I am using it for).

A 2500k might also be a better choice. HT doesn't really add too much to the mix except with the odd multi threaded application.

I use AutoGK, DVD decryptor, and a few other for converting to mobile media (WINAIO, cucusoft)
