Help: Overclocking Athlon II x4 620

Thread Starter
Hi everyone. I'm pretty new to overclocking so I don't know a whole lot, but I've had some minor success already I guess. Here's what I'm running:

Athlon II x4 620
Hyper 212+ (Temps are always really low ~20C idle and ~31C while running Prime95)
Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
OCZ Gold Edition DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)

I manually set the recommended timings and voltage for my ram in the bios which is 1.5v 7-7-7-16. They say I can go up to 1.6v. The one thing I'm really confused about is my Memory timings and frequency. I manually set the memclock value in my bios to 533MHz. Am I supposed to set that to half of 1066 like I did? My options only went up to 800MHz. Also, I put DRAM Timing Mode on Both and set the following: TCL - 7, TRCD - 7, TRP, 7, tRTP - Auto, TRAS 16, and everything else auto. Everything was listed again, I'm assuming for the 2nd DIMM, so I set the same for those values. Did I do this right?

The multiplier for my CPU is capped at 13x and that's what I've been running on. Then I upped the FSB to 230 from 200 and everything seemed to be running stable. I've also set the voltage manually to 1.3v which is stock. I used the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool just for the hell of it and got no errors.

I've noticed that my voltage and core speed and multiplier change constantly and go back up to what I set them at when I'm actually doing things. I guess this is caused by Cool 'n' Quiet, which I just turned off.

I was just running Prime95 and all of a sudden my monitor showed were the words "Input Not Supported". I had to reboot and the problem was fixed. Maybe it's because I'm on the 11.10 beta drivers. I've never had that happen before

My PC froze twice while I was just browsing the web. No blue screen or anything, just frozen. Put the FSB back to 200 and it seems to be ok now, running Prime95 again with no problems. Not really sure what to do now.

Thanks for any help.

You did everything well it seems. Yes, set both DIMMs to spec as to voltage and timings concerns. Now, if you're going to increase FSB, set the RAM speed a bit lower, at 400MHz, so you won't bge OCeing your RAM as of now. You may want to disable all the Energy saving options and throttling modes until you are sure to have found a stable OC for your CPU.

Try 230MHz FSB at stock voltage with less speed on RAM. Decrease the HT link multi by one too, to x9, as you want this to be as close to 2000MHz as possible.

Give it a try smile.gif

Thanks for the response.

I didn't see a multiplier for my HT link, just a ref clock so I put it to 1800MHz, which was the next lowest setting. In CPU-Z it says my HT link is at 2070.2MHz and my core speed is 2990.1MHz. The CPU voltage setting I changed was called CPU Over Voltage, it was the only one I saw for CPU voltage so I'm guessing it was the right one. All energy saving options/throttling modes are off. Do you think I'd gain anything by turning off onboard video? I don't think it's being used since I have a PCI-e graphics card. I lowered my ram speed to 400MHz and CPU-Z reports that it's at 460. 1:2 FSB-DRAM ratio

It's been about 5 minutes and I've been good. What's the next step if everything stays alright?

You'll just need to raise CPU voltage if you aren't stable at a given FSB setting. When you BSOD you increase vCore a little to see if it holds stable. Don't go crazy on the voltage though.1.45-1.475V should be your max if you go 24/7. (You can go 1.5V if temps are OK though)
Your RAM is now running at a total speed of 920MHz, so you still have some headroom to increase FSB without going over spec on the RAM. With the RAM multi at x2 (400MHz for a final speed of 800MHz) you can go up to 265MHz FSB to reach 1066MHz on the RAM. This can require a lot of voltage on the chip, or maybe not. You'll need to go slowly increasing the FSB and voltages, adjusting HT Link and CPU-NB multi/voltage to reach it.

If everything is good at those settings, try rasing FSB to 235, lowering HT link again (Don't worry if it will go below 2000MHz). You may leave CPU-NB multi at 10, but past the 2400MHz you might need to increase its voltage to 1.2-1.25V to remain stable.

Disabling the on-board video will have little to none effect on stability, it only means that the board chip won't clock as well as others, like the 790X or 790FX wink.gif

If you find a setting where everything is stable and you feel like it is enough, you can stop there smile.gif
I would try to reach 265MHz FSB biggrin.gif

Thanks for all your help so far. Right now I'm still on stock voltages with the FSB at 245 and the HT link still at 1800. Everything seems pretty good and I'm happy with the results so far. Temps are slowly rising but I'll be good since I have the hyper 212+. I guess once I freeze up or get a BSOD I'll try to up some volts and lowering the HT link again.

Maybe not...I just tried running Prime95 and my computer restarted itself...what does that mean? I'm back at 240 now.

It means it candle hold that FSB without a slight volotage increase. You don't need to keep lowering the HT Link. I just said to lower it to maintain it close to 2000MHz wink.gif

Whats your vcore and load temps now?

Ok what I had it on before wasn't stable, I even tried upping the vcore a notch and I still got a BSOD while running Prime95's Small FFTs.

As of now the FSB is at 235, HT is set at 1800, vcore is set at 1.3.

Edit: even got a BSOD running Prime95 on these settings

Try vcore at 1.4 with higher FSB. You are good up to 1.45V wink.gif And you can set the HT link multi up by one notch too smile.gif

How's your CPU-NB multi? at 10?

My CPU/NB Frequency multiplier has been set at auto. I'll put it on 10x with FSB at 245, vcore at 1.4, and HT Link Frequency at 1800MHz
