Going multi monitor question(s)

Thread Starter
So i'll soon be running a 4 monitor setup (3+1 above) and was wondering if I'll run into any weird issues running this setup and gaming on 3 bottom displays.
Also, will 2 1.5gb 580s be enough to play all games at high settings/some form of AA/decent framerates? Or should I be looking to upgrade to 3gb versions?

Thanks

Edit: Also... Will I have to push my i5 a bit harder to avoid bottlenecking?

The CPU is fine at the speed its at, i would get 3GB cards, in BF3 at 1080p on my system it uses up to 1.6gb.... also you can only run 3 monitors on SLI 580 as far as i know.

Or a cheap third card for the top screen. I would do 2 6970s though. Up to 5 monitors on that setup.

I thought I had read that you could do a 3+1 setup for Surround. While indeed, it does say it here:

Possible Display Configurations

NVIDIA 3DVS support 3x1 monitor configurations in both Portrait and Landscape. It also supports a 4th display, along with the Surround SLS. This display can be used for email, watching movies or IM while playing games on the SLS in windowed mode. 3D is only support in Landscape mode (on supported monitors). 3D Portrait Mode is supported on 3D Vision Projectors.
I tried connecting a spare 22" monitor just to test and see if this was true. What I found was that if you use your GPU's in Surround, they will not extend to the 4th display. An option that I was offered, though, was to take one of my 580's out of Surround and use it as a GPU dedicated to that one display. Therefore, iCrap is correct in that you should look into a third cheap GPU just for this purpose.

This thread has had some mixed experiences with doing that:

To me, it just means that you need to have the right drivers to support all GPU's involved, but it should work.

With that said, Eyefinity is the more robust option here for 3+1 that just flat out works right off the bat without any extra hardware. So if you must have this monitor setup, and don't want to deal with the hassle of the more hardware than needed, AMD is the way to go.
