5970 Issues

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I'm new here. I just picked up a 5970 a couple days ago and I've been having issues since I installed it. I'll list my system specs then go into the details.
i5-2500k @4.8ghz
1tb raid 0
ATI 5970
Corsair 650 watt psu
Windows 7 HP 64bit

Currently no matter what drivers I use, I'll either get a BSOD or my computer will freeze with an audio loop while playing games or running certain benchmarks.
I haven't overclocked this card yet so it can't be that. The BSOD error is always 0000000x116 which is Driver timing out. I've installed 11.8, 11.9, 11.10 preview and no change between any of them. I did a fresh install on this system about a week ago and I had a 6950 in there before this 5970. No driver issues with the 6950. I don't know what else to do. I do have an 850 watt corsair prof. series modular psu arriving tomorrow, but I doubt that is the main issue. I am at a complete loss here.....

If you have latest Catalyst 11.9 and CAP (Catalyst Application Profiles to support Crossfire) and getting error code 0x00000116, try to use only one stick of memory and try each stick if one of them was faulty.

Also, if your system was overclocked, CPU and RAM, restore them to default during the test.

Let's know how it goes.

Could be the PSU. That is the minimum requirement for the 5970. Try it with the new PSU. I am currently running 11.8 without any issues.

You should post your system specs in your sig. It will give everyone more information so they can assist you.

Tried all that. Settings are all stock now and tried both 4gb sticks independently and no issues with either. Still BSOD'ing with the x00000116 error. "Driver Timed out" I have 11.10 preview installed now but 11.9 didn't work either even with the cap profile.

Yea, all point to PSU if it happens only in 3D clock but never happened in desktop 2D clock. Without knowing your PSU +12V wattage and how the rail distributed, tentatively it is the PSU.

While waiting for the new PSU to arrive, you can try the card in anothe PCIe slots if you want.

Yes the PSU is the most likely cause. Though I've had my x00000116 error with a wrong overclock on my cards/cpu, they needed more voltage...

Thanks for all the replies. UPS says end of the day for delivery so my fingers are crossed for that being the problem. The thing I don't understand is how Furmark is completely stable. Ran it last night for 2 hours with no issues. Everything else gave me issues.

Tried the memory. It doesn't seem to be the issue. I reinstalled my 6950 and I'm not having any issues at all with the card.
