WiFi need to know a few things

Hey guys I was wondering whether someone could help me with improving my knowledge about WiFi. Now don't get me wrong I'm not an idiot when it comes to wireless it's just I would like to know a few things and thought I'd ask on here.

First thing I'd like to know is obliviously the letters. They seem to rate wireless based on letters and I haven't really looked into it before so I'm not that wise on the types there are. I know it has something to do with the max speed of the connection between the wireless hub and the device but that's about it. So I thought instead of finding some 3 year old guide on the net I'd ask on here

I know it's horrible and hopefully we will be moving over to sky so hopefully it'll mean we'll be able to sort out a nice new router then but at the moment I have the BT homehub and it's the very first version they came out with too!

However me and my dad have quite a few things that are wireless like our iPhones (1 each) his laptop, his TV, the Xbox and my laptop when I use it. Thankfully my PC is conected via Ethernet but then again everything else isn't and that means the Xbox can't stream movies from my PC or sky (when we upgrade to sky)

So I was thinking maybe getting a wireless box for my room to boost the wireless and plug my PC into that? Idk I guess I'll have to wait until we go over to sky haha hopefully they don't have a skyhub like the BT homehub.

There is a bit more to it than just the maximum throughput, but here you go.

B Maximum = 11 Mbit/s
G Maximum = 54 Mbit/s
N Maximum = 150 Mbit/s

I suggest looking over the 802.11 protocol's in general because achieved throughput is much lower and variable by distance from AP, interference, etc.
