External harddisk and Windows 7.

Hello everybody. I have a 60 gb SSD in my rig and an external 500gb. 60 gb is kinda small. So I am intending to trade off boot up time for storage. Can I install and make my external HDD my primary drive and install games and apps I use daily on my SSD? The ext HDD is connected through USB

Yes, just select the USB 500GB in BIOS as first boot drive and install your games and apps in the SSD. I am doing that too, just trade off boot up time.

I tried plugging in but seems that the installer doesn't recognize the external HDD as a Windows 7 ready drive... Do I need to reformat it?

Yes that might help as the installer needs to put BCD (Boot Configuration Data) on that drive.

OMG.

Running win7 from a USB drive sounds like a HORRIBLE idea. I cannot express how bad of an idea that really is...

I would much rather see you break open that external drive and hook it up internally on your computer if possible

On top of that, it is possible to move you program file folder and other user data off of the drive to the external drive to save space on the ssd. To move the whole program files directory, you would need to use the mklink command in a cmd window when booted from a system repair disk. Have you looked into doing that yet?

If it's USB 3.0, then that joker has transfer rates approaching *** speed. In fact, I'd run Windows off of a USB 3.0 drive.

Now 2.0 is another matter entirely...

True, I will admit that I assumed the OP was talking about a USB 2.0 drive
