[Toms] Should You Upgrade? Hard Drive to SSD - Page 16

It really boils down to each persons needs.

I don't like SDD's, mostly because of their poor price per GB (after all, a storage devices main selling point is capacity) but also what troubles me is the write limit that they suffer from.

I'll embrace SSD's as soon as the technology matures a bit and the creases are ironed out (and the price is acceptable) -- assuming nothing else is bought to the table between then and now.

Till then i'm not wasting a penny.
The capacity is the main selling point of a mechanical HDD, SSDs aren't really meant to be compared to them because they'll destroy them in speed for everything.

As for that write limit, you won't hit that in 5 years.

Only people who don't got one talk trash, until you go SSD you'll never know what you're missing, spinning rusts are so 90's.

Currently: Samsung 470 + 3x 2TB F4
Next: Samsung SSD 830

This is the last thing I'd spend $ on when building a system. Not saying no, just saying I am more likely to spend the budget on CPU, RAM and GPU.

SSDs are not overhyped...

The is absolutely no seek time, the is no mechanical device, it is pure solid state. Everyons OS constantly reads & writes.. wi5th an SSD there are zero background hiccups & it is the single greatest performance upgrade anyone can make.

If u don't agree, it is because you remain ignorant of what a computer system is & does. Uno(?) Moving tiny bits of 0"s &1's around.

It has nothing to do with star5ing programs faster & all about having an unfettered OS.

Secondly, Win7 (w/add ons) only uses 25GB, so those who keep suggesting they can't afford one, are just using it as an excuse. Heck the top rated Crucial M4 (64GB) is only $104. Then, u can easily add 1TB for games, appd & storage for $65 bucks.

Writes are no a problem. Unless you are using the SSD as a cache drive then more than likely you will never ever be able to kill NAND from writing to the cells too many times. You could write 50GB a day and the drive will still last more than a decade.

Crucial M4 the best boot drive to go with right now? Real shame there's no deals going on on drives or either type right now.

EDIT: Someone saw the Intel 320 series 120GB SSD for $169.99 after $25 rebate. 5-year warranty too. Worth getting over an M4?
