Half decent gaming headset.

Thread Starter
Hello I am hoping you can help me out today.

I have looked around through the forums but couldn't find a thread that asked for a good gaming headset.

I have been looking at the turtle beach z6a's. They are $139 and true 5.1.
I wouldn't like to spend anymore than $140.

Is true surround sound worth it? or is virtual as good?
Would you recommend a sound card? or just use on-board audio.

So basically what would be the best headset ( Needs mic) for gaming be, for under $140.

I live in Australia and prices are much higher here but don't mind ordering from websites.

Thank you in advance.

I know this headset will receive a lot of negative reviews from the audiophiles here, but I've been extremely happy with my Logitech G35.

audio technica ath-ad700's + zalman zm-mic1

shop around, i'm sure you can find that combo for a decent price. for $140 that turtle beach crap or any "gaming headset" would be a waste of money!
there is no such thing as 7.1 or 5.1 or any other "surround" headset. you have 2 ears, unless you cut one or both of them off that wont change. the reason why loudspeakers come in surround configurations is because they are distant from your ears and thus its difficult to keep even directional levels, with earphones there is no such issue so getting some cans with a good sound stage is the best thing you can do.

generally open type cans have a superior stage and you probably want something comfy if you're going to have them on for more then a few hours so hd518 is probably for you

You'll want to check out the links in my sig for lots of information regarding headsets, what headphones you should buy, why you'll need a sound card etc.

I would suggest staying away from "True 5.1" headsets or even headsets that offer virtual surround sound. If you want surround, you should be getting that from your sound card as opposed to your headphones. Your headphones should have 2 drivers, typically open air design, over the ear, and have a large sound stage with good mids. Those accumulated into one headphone should offer you the best gaming experience.

I got a refurbished pair of Razer Carcharias' on a woot-off for $25 or so. I love them. I had some Speedlink Medusas that cost $120ish (not worth it). They sounded great, but my Razer's sound just as good.

The JVC HA-RX700 are simply great for the price. I got them with a small little Laptop Boom mic that p[lugs right into the mic jack on the back of my Razer Lycosa Keyboard. Total for both items combined was about $45. Spend a few bucks on some faom so you can do the foam mod for these headphones and you should not be disappointed. I used Window Air Condition Open Cell Foam from Ace Hardware. This stuff is great for this. Just cut it in half lengthwise after getting how much length you need and stuff it in. Gets the pads off your ears and offers better sound quality.

Ok i went through this same crysis man!! so what did i do .. up my budget and boguht a G930 and a AT-M50's ....

But i bought wach of mine for G930 for 70$ and the AT-M50's fopr 90$ .... well under what you are looking for ....

So comes down to what you want ... You want bass? I say get nothing but the Sony with 50mm driver deep full bass ... (Link)
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-XB700-Diaphragm-Driver-Headphones/dp/B001RB24SW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318012261&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: Sony MDR-XB700 50mm XB Diaphragm Driver Extra Bass Headphones: Electronics[/ame]
Then if you are not to worried and just want responsive music/games/and dont care for bass if you need it then get these... (link)
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-AD700-Open-air-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B000CMS0XU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318012428&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: Audio Technica ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Audiophile Headphones: Electronics[/ame]

But as they are the same price as the AT-M50's ... i would want the best of both worlds ... But hey there are some other headphone if you want something different like the 555's or the 595's but the best bang for the all around buy are the AT-M50's ... Hifi voted these next to the 1500$ headphones man .... best bang for the $$ any day ... that is why i got these ...

and the mike ... here you go :
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Microphone-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone/dp/B00029MTMQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318012428&sr=1-3"]Amazon.com: Zalman Microphone Zm-Mic1 High Sensitivity Headphone Microphone Retail: Electronics[/ame]

You can not go wrong with these head phones paired with this mic ... hope it helps! (dont pay for 'gaming headphones and waist your money for a few words that mean nothing ... and these guy telling you that a gaming head set is fine have never herd or used a real head set...)
