is pairing better than having just a single module? that is, 2x4gb is better than 1x8gb?
Yes, sorry, 2x4gb is better than 4x2gb. And yes, you want to run them in pairs. Most ram kits are sold in pairs so that makes things easy.

you said not to crazy with high-end cards, so, which would you recommend? there's just so many out there even with the same types/series.

If you wanna overclock you'll need a P67 or Z68 board and if possible, unlocked CPU:

i5-2500K
ASUS P8P67 or a bit more expensive P8Z68-V
2x4GB DDR3-1600

400-450W should be more than enough for that PC. Recommedation for Antec VP-450, Corsair 430W, others are overkill.

Graphics Card: GTS 450 is faster, and not to expensive.

I dont like LE ASUS mobos. If you want cheaper one, you have Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3 (still has SATA 3 and USB 3, not great for overclock, but better than ASUS LE).

since you are not building this rig for gaming, then i would spend to get the best processor possible to suit your needs better

you also said that you would not play games so i picked an nvidia quadro instead because it is alot faster than consumer video card because it is specifically design to this kind of task especially if you are using Adobe CS5

I found an old psu, brand new never used APEX AL-A400ATX 400W that I bought a long time ago. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817154013

Will this work for the new system? Or will I be better off getting the Corsair 430CXV2EU or Antec VP-450?

The AL-A400ATX looks to have good reviews just not sure if it will be enough power?
Between the Corsair 430CXV2EU or Antec VP-450 I see the Corsair to have more good reviews compared to the Antec.

Going to i7 seems a big jump in price so I might stay with the i5.

For the mobo option:
Asus P8P67
AsRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 (I found a place selling the Extreme4 for the same price as Extreme3)
Asus P8Z68-V

Rok,

What's your actual budget with everything (monitor, speakers, etc.) included?

CORSAIR CX V2 Series [CMPSU-500CXV2EU] should be more then enough
as far as the GfX go for a HD 6670 and the Sinper RAM as good for ur budget and there are low powered RAMs just 1.35v i guess
