Well, there is something intriguing about Bulldozer being released in the middle of the week.
Products that are more or less flops tend to be released on Friday, preferably after the Stock Exchange has closed, so that people can cool down during the weekend and so the company stocks don't drop so much because of rushed emotional first minute decisions.
On the other hand, sucessful products can perfectly launch on a Monday. The stocks will go up during the whole week.
So, why a Wednesday, and, specifically, why THIS Wednesday ?
Some people have talked about the remote possibility of BIOS updates doing miraculous things for performance, but given that most BIOS updates for motherboard manufacuturers have been released a few days ago, it seems unlikely to see another one so soon. Especially given that blog post on AMD's site telling people to update their BIOSes in advance, right ? It's because they know new performance enhancing BIOSes won't be released afterwards. Also, it would in every case be unlikely that a BIOS would yield any sort of meaningful improvement at this late stage in BIOS updates.
On the other hand, it is known that the OS can be updated with performance improvements to better support a given family of CPUs. Let's not forget that AMD released a standalone Dual Core Optimizer
a few years ago.
And interestingly, tomorrow (or today depending on where you are), is Microsoft's patch Tuesday.
Patch Tuesday is usually the second Tuesday of each month

So, given that some Mods here and there have been a little secretive but showing some optimism here and there, it's quite possible we are in for a little surprise. I still don't expect the top of the line FX-8150 to overcome a Core i7 2600k, or else the prices we have been hearing are all wrong also (it a possibility though), but it should add some competitiveness in some tasks that might change people's perception.
Tech journalists probably received this patch as a standalone file in AMD's Press Kit.
I sure hope so. Competition is good for everybody.Edited by tpi2007 - 10/10/11 at 11:14pm
