Hey guys I had a little play last night at midnight and liked the new game from id but am I the only person who can't find the graphics settings??

They definitely aren't in game so I'm guessing it benches itself and sets a detail level or something along those lines. I was a little strange out to find it was an openGL game instead of DX but I don't know the exact details so I can't really say it's any worse for not using DX.

But tell me what you think; I like the animation, and AI it seems they try to dodge your bullets efficiently (but I still kick their ass like a bowz haha) but still quite easy on nightmare. BUT I have literally played about 30 mins so it might get harder and probably will

I don't like the fact the AI is easy and hope it'll get harder and I really think it is because its the beginning mission haha. I also don't like that I can't set the graphics up but they do still look pretty although the textures are a little low res for a ground braking id game for my liking but that's like saying I don't like the Mona Lisa because it's made out of paint. Although as is 21 and a half gigabytes, that's right 21.5GB! I would have hoped there would be a to turn it up to max and get the best GFX there are rivalling BF3 and considering id try their best to be on the forefront of graphics hopefully there is a way to unlock the graphics and optimise graphics/performance

Yes,there are no graphics options in game. It's said that they are working on a patch to add options. As of right now, all graphics settings must be configured through a custm config file.

Take a look through the Official RAGE thread, there are many things to do to increase the detail level of the game.

As I understand it you are correct. the game its-self balances your settings based on the rig you are using. There is no way to manually adjust the settings.

Crysis 2, Rage...

Whats up with releasing these 'incomplete' games... I know they are upgraded patches, but both games had some serious release issues...

I would personally rather wait until the game is finalized and released later because now I don't even feel like playing it with low textures and no graphic options...

At least Batman: Arkham City understands that concept...

That is just so odd. I can't imagine not having *some* level of control of graphics quality in a game.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it indicates the game is "unfinished", as I would guess that a graphics options dialog would probably be a trivial addition during the development process, so I do really wonder what their logic was for not implementing it.

Environments are hit and miss due to random low res textures, however the character models, textures and animations are probably the best I've ever seen in a game so far.

Animation and art direction are great. Visually, the best part of the game is the megatextures. The environment doesn't have any tiled textures, so it's very engaging to look at. Megatexture definitely gives the game a different look than any other game that I've played. The downside of course is that you have a ton of textures to load into memory, so some of the textures are shockingly low quality to save space.

Besides megatexture, the game is very much graphically inferior to Crysis and metro 2033. No parallax mapping and lack of any dynamic lights (!!!) stands out. Doom 3 with Sikkmod has lighting that's lightyears ahead of Rage, which is sad to think about considering Doom3 is tech4.

id have released information blaming poor performance on drivers from AMD and Nvidia and have said that they'll add a couple of features like manually being able to set the vsync, but in the same interview they have basically admitted the game is aimed at consoles although I have to admit the character models and animations are unparraled only being beaten (although there was something I didn't quite like about it) lanoire.

Although textures are terrible in certain areas I think this may improve with driver updates from both AMD and Nvidia but the fact the game has no settings other than resolution, antialiasing, brightness and gpu transcoding means there's no options to customise the settings to your individual machine.

Personally this is a huge dissapointment as it seems they've made what most people refer to a console port. And considering I was hoping for great graphics some of the textures I saw where a huge shock and somewhat repulsive as I'd hate to seem them on a current gen console let alone my PC.

In this interview Jhon Carmack says "We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games."

That being said you can't say they haven't put alot of detailing into things that really should make the game like gameplay, AI and story.

I'm enjoying the game I just wish there was better textures... Maybe GPU drivers will improve that somehow?

On the other hand defiantly worth buying on an console if your an Xbox or PlayStation gamer as personally I love the atmosphere, character animations and game mechanics. Think a higher detailed Fallout but with racing and boomerangs that take off heads, admittedly not as much of an RPG as Fallout but defiantly a similarity.

I know there are some console codes that may be of use to you guys. I'm not actually sure how to use these, as I don't actually have the game, so this is just a copy paste from another forum:

com_AllowConsole 1
com_SkipIntroVideo 1

These two just allow the console to work and skips the logo videos.
vt_qualityhdplossless 1
vt_qualityhdppower 0
vt_qualityhdpspecular 0
vt_qualityhdpnormal 0
vt_qualityhdpdiffuse 0
vt_qualitydctpower 100
vt_qualitydctspecular 100
vt_qualitydctnormal 100
vt_qualitydctchroma 100
vt_qualitydctluma 100
These set overall quality level, lower on the HDP and higher (percentage) on the DCT with lossless support. (However the textures are what they are so you can’t expect miracles.)
vt_usecudatranscode 2
This is the CUDA function but 2 enables all of it not just smart mode.
vt_maxppf 1024
vt_maxlockedpages 256
These are what I’m struggling with now, a value of 2048 and 1024 respectively will cut down texture streaming to less than a second but will also cause possible glitches and stability problems so I’m testing various compromises here.(This is the number of paged\\cached megatexture pages or what to call them.)
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
This is max texture resolution, again the textures are what they are and you can not get them to be better than that other than with some small tricks.
vt_minlod -1
Slightly negative LOD for a sharper image
vt_uncompressedvmtr 1
vt_uncompressedphysicalimages 1
vt_vmtrcompression none
Use uncompressed data (If available, it’s not.) instead of compressed and compression method. (Tab two times will cycle compression levels, that’s also how I found the CUDA = 2 thing.)
vt_maxaniso 16
Tell the megatextures to use full 16x AF filtering instead of 2x, sharper unless forced via CCC / NVCP already.

If this helps anybody, great, if not, well I tried.
