Q8200 Overclock help?

Thread Starter
I've been trying to overclock my CPU these couple of days, gathering all the info on the net as much as possible (pretty new to OC). I managed to get my CPU to 3.01 GHz, but the problem with that is after my PC POSTS and get's into the operating system, about a minute or sometimes even less my PC reboots. I believe I have a stock CPU cooler, but I'm not sure, doesn't look really fancy or anything. My temp was 61 C IDLE at 3.01 GHz.

I want to know what's causing the restarts.
(Build in my sig)

FSB: 1730
Memory: 800
Core Voltage: 1.4v
NB Voltage: 1.52v

Wow 61C Idle is way to high to start out with. You are probably restarting due to high heat and such. Try to see if you can boot at a lower voltage and I would not recommend overclocking on the stock cooler as it just fails for overclocking

Do you think if I got a new Heatsink/Cooler the restarting might stop?
I was thinking of getting this one

61c at idle is waaaaaaaaaaaaay to hot brother. My cpu barely hits that under full load with 1.44v CPU-Z.

That cooler + MX-4 or Shin Etsu thermal grease will bring your temps way down.

But, another thing you have to consider is your RAM. I'm not familiar with that board's BIOS but you'll have to do some manipulation to keep that RAM's speed in check--not sure how hard 6400 RAM can run.... But those cpu temps are more-than-likely your problem atm.

Edit: another thing 1.52v is a ton of NB voltage. Careful with that.

I realized the NB 1.52v was alot, I got it down to NB 1.38v which still POSTS, but it still restarts, the temp was still pretty high 61C.

I guess investing in that cooler wouldn't be a bad investment.

I'm running at stock speeds atm, the temp for IDLE at stock is 42C, is that bad?

42c is not BAD but, idle temps only tell you so much because of so many factors: ambient temp, case airflow, fans.... 42 is good for now. Won't hurt anything.

The important temps are the load temps. That's where you'll see what's what. That Q8200 might not reach the moon oc-wise but, I'm sure you could squeeze a little more out of it.

I go up to 1.42 on my NB but I've replaced the TIM with MX-4 and have a tiny fan stuck onto it. All-in-all you're good for now.

Just get a good cooler--doesn't have to break the bank or anything... just something that'll let you go a bit further on that cpu.
