Need a new router could use some advice

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

My current situation involves a family of 4 all with laptops and phones ect, who consistently upload photos to Facebook and download music&movies from torrents ect, making the connection unusable for gaming.

I'm with Virgin media on a 10Mb package which on average is 2MB down and 0.1 up, being so easy to max out down&up its unusable as far as games is concerned. I can be playing fine with really nice ping until I spike to 5k ms for the minute of a photo is uploading to Facebook, or being completely unusable all together while vuze/bittorrent is running on the other machines.

Its started allot of small wars. I have asked them to simply queue downloads, and me being the last awake would turn them on before I go to sleep. This is kinda working as long as they don't have a urgent need for the file, but then getting them to stop uploading to Facebook is another problem.

I have tried programmes to limit their bandwidth on their machines but untimitly on such a crappy connection its becomes unusable for them and still increases my ping to an unusable level

I'm using some random router atm that does not have QOS and so are looking for a new one, having never used QOS I'm looking for advice from people who do. Will QOS be worth paying for, will it be able to offer good ping even when the connection is maxed out in both upload and download?

Ive had a little look at routers so far but is there anything else that would help, the only requirements im looking at so far is wireless N, & QOS for my gaming. My computer is wired connection

Also if there are any recomendations for a router to that would help allot, id prefer to stay under £50, this is one i had my eye on - click

Well staying in your price range I am partial to these. I would prefer to recommend others but they are outside the range you are looking for.

Concur with the above, personally I'd go for the WNR2200 or the Cisco 320 router (flashed to DD-WRT) - both would be adequate for you staying within your budget.

So im looking more towards the WRT320N. I've looked on the manufacturers website for a better list of features and seems to be well equied, you also menction flashing the software, is there a guide or a page i can read up on this, what are the benfiits ect?

And also my initial question was kinda skipped, is QOS capable of delivering a usable experience for gaming on a low speed connection which is consistently caped from downloads/torrents/uploading?

I ask this because I don't want to waste £50 when my backup plan is to get another connection with a different ISP, I want to avoid this if possible.

and thanks to the above posters +rep

You can check out dd-wrt.com for what their open source firmware package offers. Read their Wiki for other information, and if you have more specific questions you can ask on their forums, or ask here - between the two sets of users you shouldn't have any problems getting help. I haven't used DD-WRT since I got my Asus N16 router, but when I did use it on my wrt54g router it was a very nice feature set upgrade from the stock firmware. If you're not comfortable using 3rd party firmware, even the stock Linksys firmware will do you just fine - I'm not sure about the QoS features it provides though...

To answer the QoS question, yes, it is able to improve the gaming experience by putting the information from whatever applications/ports you desire at a higher priority than the bulk data types that you say are capping your bandwidth. It does take some time to setup the rules properly and it may not be the largest difference, but it can help. Also it wouldn't be a wasted 50 because if you did have to get a 2nd connection, having the router can help if you have multiple pc's or a wireless connection yourself.

I can tell you this much, the Asus N16 is a great router and all (its what I've got), but man, the DD-WRT makes things so confusing. I can't even figure out how to flash it back now so I can configure the stupid thing.

Anyway back at the OP:
QoS should do what you're wanting. I just have absolutely no clue how to set it up, but I've seen it work wonders on friend's networks that were being bogged by torrenting. The only reason their network was still slow for gaming was because their router wasn't fast enough to handle that many conections (torrents). If you get a good router now, it should handle it fine.

Maybe you should try TomatoUSB (especially Toastman's build)?

Regardless, get that RT-N16. Best router hands down (unless you want 5 GHz band).
