WOW! Incredible results! Cooling! Read inside!

Thread Starter
Alright I had to make a separate thread for this because its shocking to me.

So lately I've been trying to overclock my CPU to the limit. Started around 4.5, went to 4.6, 4.7, and 4.8. I think my chip is fairly voltage hungry, so at 4.5 I needed 1.36 Volts to run stable.

Here were my temp results for 30 mins on Prime95 blend.

Now some people would say "decent" "not bad" "pretty average" and I was pretty content with the results. I felt that the temps were a bit high so I asked my bro and he thought they were kinda high too. He suggested that I reapply thermal paste. I thought it may have been some settings that I was pretty hot, or that my hyper 212+ wasn't really that great.

So I decided to reapply thermal paste and check out what my thermal paste looked like. When I took off my heatsink I couldn't believe my eyes! I had done the line through the middle (over the cores) and thats it. Well it basically did a rectangle on the CPU and it was covering about 1/3 of the CPU. I was surprised my CPU didn't overheat like crazy! So I cleaned it all off with coffee filters and 99% isopurple whatever rubbing alcohol and reapplied thermal paste. This time I knew that I need a decent amount more and to cover more surface area. So I put a pea size blob in the middle and spread it on the whole CPU this time with my finger in a bag. THEN I also put a tiny strip ACROSS the heatsink because there are several gaps and crevices to fill.

I then put it back on, and booted up my computer.

Here are my results now on the exact same settings!

I can't believe I dropped 13-16*C or more from my core temps! I honestly didn't know thermal paste played THAT MUCH in cooling down your CPU!

Now I feel very confident to push my CPU to 4.8 or even 5.0 with these temps! Before on 4.8 I was getting extremely hot very fast and I could never really run Prime95 because it was pushing 80*C! I feel now I can get to 4.8 or 5.0 at around 75-80*C stable. LETS HOPE!

Just posted this thread to everyone else with seemingly high temps to try to reapply your thermal paste! It may drop your temps even more then mine!

EDIT: I'm using a i5 2500K and a CM Hyper 212+

WTH? ...I need to remount lol. I've never had temps drop like that.

Looks like normal after properly applying thermal paste. Your temperatures can get really bad if there is not full thermal paste coverage.
