4.8/1.465 Volts - Couple questions

Thread Starter
Currently running 4.8 at 1.465 volts and I have a couple questions...

My voltage spikes up to 1.480 sometimes which is more then I've usually got from spikes. Usually spikes are around .08 volts. So like 1.473 would be max in most cases when I've been overclocking. I enabled PLL overvoltage for it to run properly. Is that why I'm spiking more?

Also, is this a high voltage for 4.8? I don't understand how some people can run 4.8+ at like 1.3xx volts! I cant even get into windows without being at least 1.465.

I'm currently running Prime95 blend with these settings and seems pretty good.

Another question. I have my LLC at level 2, which seemed good for voltage fluctuating but now that its hitting 1.480 should I put LLC to level 1?

EDIT: Antoehr question. Does TEMPS cause BSOD ever? Like say I hit a high temp would it BSOD 124?

EDIT 1: Antoher question. Why does my core speed always say under the multiplier I put in. For example I put (48x) multiplier and it says on CPU-z 4789.9 why doesnt it say 4800.5 or whatever

Every single chip is different...
My 2500k also need 1.465v to do 4.8ghz.

Mine takes about 1.45v for 4.8GHz. Every chip is different.

High temps won't cause a BSOD, but its not good if you're over 85*C. 124 BSOD is usually more vcore needed.

My threshold personally was 80*C, but currently I'm on 45 mins of Prime blend and I hit 82*C on 1 core.

Right now I'm at 73-82-79-77 max temp on realtemp does this seems alright for 4.8 with air? I didn't stop it because I know that 82 is the absolute max so I'm keeping it on. I feel that when the vcore bumps to 1.480 its making it go to that 82*C on the FFT 8K. I wish I could just make it stay at 4800 mhz and 1.65 volts.

I hope the bolded is a typo.

On air, you're doing very well. I couldn't break 4.5-4.6 on air with mine (Xigmatek S1283....same thing as a Hyper 212). I was only able to break 4.8 with a stock H50. Then my modded H50 is taking me to 1.50v which gets me to 4.9.

So yeah, you're doing very well for air. Honestly, I can't even feel a difference over 4.5GHz anyway. I'm only at 4.90GHz because I fold with it.

Ya thats a typo, i meant 1.465. Alright well if this continues I might just go for the 12 hours prime95 for the sandy stable club and keep on 4.8. I don't think I can push 5.0 at all without watercooling. I think I could easily run 5.0 but the temps would be too high. I'd prolly need to go like 1.480 or something. I think I'll just chill on 4.8

I'm willing to bet on it, that your chip won't do 5.0GHz with safe voltages (under 1.52 with offset). Mine does 4.8GHz with a little less than yours does. It seems that getting 4.8 and higher tends to take huge jumps in vcore. I'll bet 4.90GHz on your chip would take close to 1.50v, and 5.0GHz would probably take 1.54v or so as a guess.

And if you really want to stress test stability, make sure you're doing a custom Prime95 Blend forcing most of your RAM usage. You've got 8GB, so hit the "blend" button, then hit "custom" (this forces blend options). Then change the memory to use (in MB) to 6144. That will force Prime95 blend with 6GB of RAM usage.

This will stress your IMC, CPU, and memory. If you pass that for 12 hours, you're rock solid.

While you're screwing with it, since you already know roughly what your CPU wants....try tinkering with your RAM some. See if you can get 1866 stable with slightly looser timings. Up the voltage a little (1.65v is safe on RAM, just up your VCCIO to 1.15v).

I think I'm going to leave the RAM for now because most people say you only get a very minor performance increase.

My ram was set to 11-11-11-28 at one point by default. Dunno if that makes a difference.

Ya I guess I cant get 5.0. I'm completely happy with 4.8 and I'm going to go for my 12 hour stability.

I dunno if you could tell me, but how many hours/tests do I need to do for video card stability? Would an hour or two on OCCT be enough? And to get through multiple 3DMARKs and gaming in BF3?

Well, RAM speed makes a difference in some things, and doesn't in others. If you can get 1866 stable with say 9-10-9-28, or 9-11-9-28, you'll be fine. If not, just force stock timings at 1600 and forget about it I guess.

Video Card stability:
I use Heaven bench for that. Furmark and OCCT don't work with the GTX 5xx cards, they downclock to prevent over heating. If you run Heaven benchmark for say 45 minutes, and you pass that you're golden. No reason to go for longer. Just watch for artifacts for the first 5 minutes, about 5 minutes halfway into it, and then the last 5 minutes (letting it run that whole time). If you see none at those intervals, then its fine.

If you pass Heaven for 45 minutes, I can almost guarantee you'll be game stable. I personally used Crysis Warhead to test my overclock, but Heaven will work better.

Just so long as you're not artifacting for long periods of gaming, you're usually going to be stable.
