i7 950 stable at 4GHz?

Hello Overclock.net. This is my first post here and I hope there will be many more. I recently got into overclocking and I've read many guides and tried many different things. But I can't seem to get my rig stable at 4GHz. I can get 3.8GHz really easy with almost stock settings but when I try to jump to 4GHz it never works. My timings are at 9-9-9-24 in both examples 'cus that's what it says on them.

I got a D0 by the way. I think it's worth mentioning. I haven't seen many threads with my motherboard and processor (only 920 and 930's) so I made my own.'

How to get this stable and why the big leap from 3.8 to 4.0 with all the volts?

EDIT: Got the P6X58D-E motherboard.

What BSOD code are you getting? I would try more vcore and I find running my PLL at 1.7 also helps with stability. Your safe up to 1.4v as long as you keep in under 85c during stress testing.

Ive been working with my 950 as well overclocking to 4ghz. I would always try a 20 x 200 to get 4000mhz and be able to keep my ram at 1600mhz. It didnt work out well sometimes it would lock up. So after reading some posts here I tried this http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2035016 . I set the Vcore to 1.275 and qpi/dram to 1.35. I disabled hyperthreading and also have C1E disabled so I can test it. It passed small ffts, large ffts, and even scored 58gflops in linx using all my ram. The only thing I dont like about it is the ram. The closest I can get to 1600mhz is 1534. The next option above that is 1915 which isnt stable for me at all. So I continued my adventure and now im here http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2035130. Im testing stability now and trying to find the best possible voltage and mem timings.

Have you tried the x23 multi yet? Maybe 174 x 23 with 1.3-ish volts?

I've only used the x21 multiplier because everywhere I read they always use it and they always say it's the most stable.

Give it a try. Maybe a lower BCLK will help you out. Or just wait on someone with more knowledge on this.

What motherboard do you have? Also I see you have the Thermal Monitor disabled. I believe that is something you should keep enabled for the safety of your chip.

P6X58D-E with 1600MHz standard Corsair memories.

This is the guide I was using to help me out http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...920-930-a.html

The only 2 settings I changed voltage wise to hit 4.0ghz was vcore and qpi/dram. Maybe give it a try setting the rest to auto (except dram set that to what manufacturer suggests) and set multi to 21 with bclk of 191. Also check that thread it can help you describe what the error messages are and what to do to help stabilize it.

Lower your CPU PLL. It shouldn't be higher than 1.8...an ideal spot would be between 1.5 and 1.8
