ok I shut off the system restore and got back 1.6gb's. so far so good. will my ssd stay pretty empty now that I've shut everything off and made adjustments to save space or will it start filling up again and I'll have to repeat what I've done in the future?

Nah, these 3 changes are permanent until you format and start over (that is, Hibernation, Page File and System Restore).

I'd leave system restore on. it doesn't use that much space and the diskspace used will pay for itself the in the time spent recovering from a bad M$ update/corrupt driver install/etc..
