Should I upgrade to a 2GB 6950

Thread Starter
I picked up a Gigabyte 6950 1GB today, and so far I love it. It's a non-reference design, the one with the 3 fans, so I can't unlock it.

I'm in a bit of a predicament, I spent $260.00 for my 6950, but now I see this
2 things about this card
1. 2GB of memory, quite a bit more than my 1GB
Typically I know it doesn't make a difference, but I can't tell anymore if games will need it.
2. Possibility of unlocking to a 6970

Do you guys think I should upgrade for 40 dollars?

I have a 1080p monitor with a secondary monitor I use to monitor temps.

Sure its just money!! Says the guy who isnt going to be spending said money.

But really ive seen people talking about BF3 using those 2GB at full blown specs. But if your not planning on playing your probably not going to need it (for now at least). Also consider cooling and noise. That reference fan on the 6970 will be alot louder and less efficient than the tri fan setup you have now.

LOVE your avatar BTW!!!

Hmm....I will be playing me some battlefield 3. I also like the reference cooler because of how it looks (shallow I know).

Still have to think about it, it's a toughie

Thanks

I dunno, if you're fine with all the games right now I don't see the need to upgrade to a 2GB. VRAM comes in handy in higher resolutions and antialising.

Hmmm ... One would have to question how they all of a sudden have REFERENCE HD-6950's when they've been impossible to get for months now ... be careful, I don't know about Gigabyte but I HAVE seen that VisionTek has released NEW cards out to the market that carry the same model #'s as the old Reference cards and resellers are often using the 'Old' Ref photo's, and it's even packaged in the 'Old' boxing sometime ... BUT once people open the box they find out they've been duped into buying NEW Non-Reference Card like so ...

I have the same GPU's as you and its not stopping me from playing my games at high quality settings.

The extra ram comes into use at higher resolutions. I would buy the reference card if I was going to put it under water but those blower style fans on reference cards are going to be louder.

So....
I picked up the Dirt 3 edition 6950 and it came unlocked out of the box.

Cool beans I say, but I'll still have to flash to unlock the core speed

840 is not enough

I think there is only one kind

Try to switch to the secondary bios on the board and see if it is already unlocked
