Thinking of Changing the Fans on my N520

Hi Everyone biggrin.gif,

So I've been an avid reader in this forum and finally decided to ask a question. This place has definitely helped me, especially when i bit the bullet and built my first rig last winter.

I currently have my 1100t clocked at 4.1 running 24/7. The N520, which I'm really happy with (esp. the balance between noise and cooling) at the moment has my cpu 27-29 C during idel and around 41-46 C on BF3 beta (BF2BC gets a little higher sometimes 50's). The reason why I'm entertaining the idea of changing out the fans is because the temperatures get pretty hot during the summer time (sometimes actually hits 62 O.O;;..thank God it's fall biggrin.gif).

If i do embark on this little upgrade, do you guys have an suggestions? The fan size on the N520 is 92mm I believe. Thanks in advance! biggrin.gif

The size of the N520 looks pretty big, maybe you can use some ziptie and tie 2 120mm fan like this:

The Sycthe GentleTyphoon 120mm is highly recommended at here so you might want to have a look at it. Arctic Cooling F12 is a great choice too

But if you prefer to use 92mm fan you can always get the Arctic Cooling F9

Do not try to upgrade your N520. Instead, get a new heatsink. An HR-02 Macho is the best for the least ATM.

And be careful buying heatsinks. Make sure you buy one with a PWM fan. Your As.s motherboard can only control PWM fans.

Haha I wouldn't mind buying a new one, but I don't want to waste a perfectly good cooler by leaving it on the shelf to collect dust... Yea, I had this cooler before I got the crosshair v. Is it a problem that the board can't control the fans?! ... I figured if i replaced the fans on the N520 with 4pined ones, I could control them after. However, I thought pwm would be a luxury - the ability to adjust for sound and performance. lol please enlighten me.

PWM allows the fan to spool down when the rig is idling. Much easier on the ears and lengthens the life of the fan. Plus hearing it spool up is really cool. One thing I really appreciate in the 212+ is the PWM fan it has. Ditto Silver Arrow, HR-02 Macho.

I have two PWM fans on my Mugen 2 (it comes with a PWM fan). Because I am using two PWM cpu fans and a PWM top intake fan linked like them to the cpu fan header, the case fan spools up when the cpu fans do, so I get additional air fed to the cpu heatsink when I need it.

Ohh thanks ehume, definitely helped me out. Although it may be recommended to buy a new cooler, I just want to ask one thing. If I were to change the fans to Arctic Cooling F9's (appear to be PWM) would I get better performance? From what I read it appears I could, but iono.

Don't waste your time with 92mm fans. And as a certain wise man once said, you don't put new wine in an old skin. Of course the authorities killed him, so maybe following his advice would lead us on a torturous path . . .

Well, it's a cheap fan, but you'll hear that 1800 rpm. IMO either stick with your current heatsink & fan or buy an HR-02 Macho or a Silver Arrow.

It would be more reasonable to buy a new HSF. Like ehume said get one with PWM fan. You can keep N520 and use it on HTPC or other low power PC.
