Having problems overclocking my GTX 570 with MSI Afterburner

Hi there!

I am using a Gigabyte GTX 570 SoC (845/1900 factory oc) with the latest nVidia beta drivers 285.38 and I am having some issues with MSI Afterburner.

First of all Afterburner doesn't show the voltage on the card for some reason so I cannot change the value if needed.

I try to bump the core from 845 to 900, save and then run a couple minutes of MSI Kombustor (version 2.2) to see if it's stable or if I see any artifacts and it works fine. However when I launch World of Warcraft after a couple minutes the game stopps responding and the screen goes black, I have to alt tab and force close it - no other issues on windows though the system is responsive.

Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? How can I ensure that my card is stable at higher clocks and should I up the voltage a notch? If yes how to do that since Afterburner doesnt allow me to?

Hello!

First, if you head into Afterburner's settings, there should be some boxes that you can tick for "Unlock Voltage Control" and "Unlock Voltage Monitoring." If those aren't already checked, you know what you have to do!

Second, cards like 570s and 580s will detect when Kombustor is running and throttle down their clockspeeds in order to prevent failure from high power draw. This makes stress tests like Kombustor and OCCT useless with these cards. Try using 3dMark or Heaven Benchmark to stress test instead, since these don't appear to cause the power-limiting feature to kick in.

Also, I actually prefer to do my overclocking in Nvidia Inspector while using Afterburner as a monitoring tool, but that's just me smile.gif

Skinnysumo is absolutely correct that Kombuster is not a test you want to be using. The phenomenon he is referring to is called overcurrent protection (OCP) and works as he described and applies to at least the 560, 560ti 57, and 580 but probably the lower end cards as well I'm not sure. So avoid using things like Kombuster, Furmark, OCCT GPU etc, for stability testing instead I like Ungine Heaven for 15 minutes in between incremental increases or 45 minutes as a final check on clocks you think should be stable. Look out for either the program or drivers crashing or for artifacts that appear most often in the form of colored rays of light, almost like glare from the sun, but independent of the sun and in all different colors.

Thanks for the reply! The problem is that I have enabled those 2 options you mentioned, restarted After Burner but still it doesn't show the current voltage. Any idea why?

What do you mean it doesn't show the current voltage? Do you mean the voltage does not appear in the monitoring graph window? Do you mean the voltage slider is still greyed out? Or do you mean the voltage slider doesn't display the voltage as you expect to see it but in a different way?

The voltage appearing in the monitoring graph is solved by going to the MSI AB settings, monitoring tab, in the middle of the page under "active hardware monitoring graphs" scroll down to the bottom and check next to "GPU voltage". This will now show your current voltage in the monitoring window.

If the monitoring window is greyed out then try to update to the latest beta of MSI AB, and then verify that "unlock voltage control" and "unlock voltage monitoring" are both enabled.

If the voltage slider is not greyed out but just not displaying the voltage as you expect to see it then it's likely just reporting the voltage adjustments in terms of offset voltage. If that is the case you will see a 0 in your voltage slider rather than the 1.012v you might have been expecting. In this way of voltage adjustment it is showing you the offset voltage in terms of mV in relation to your stock voltage under load. So if your stock voltage under load is 1.012v for example then that is what it will be with a 0mV offset adjustment. If you had a setting of +12mV your new voltage under load would be 1.025v, or if you had -12mV offset it would be 1.000v, +87mV would be 1.100v and so on and so forth.

The voltage options work with the latest beta version indeed, shall I bump the voltage a notch when overclocking to 900 core, or leave it at default 1000mV?

Ooh good call on the AB version, juano!

Demarki, you'll very likely need a voltage bump to get to 900 core. I prefer to overclock step-by-step. Increase core clock in 5-10MHz increments until it's unstable, then bump the voltage up a notch. Rinse and repeat.

OP yes I also expect you to have to bump your voltage for 900Mhz, and as sumo recommends increase your clocks incrementally rather than in large amounts all at once. FYI one notch in MSI AB is the nearest 12.5mV rounded up when ending in a half point. I tell you this so you don't try to increase by just 5mV because as that's closer to 0 than 12.5mV it won't make any change. So bump it up 12.5mV at a time as needed according to your testing

Hi there and Juano, thanks again for the advice! I have manually put 1050mV and set it to 900/2000 and it seems to be working fine, played tha game for about an hour and it didn't crash. I also ran the Heaven benchmark and it didn't crash or show any artifacts, does this mean that the card is stable now? smile.gif

Should be, but it's only stable if it stays that way. It's at least not as unstable as it was before where I could tell you from here that you weren't stable at 900Mhz at 1.000v
