Crossfire noob question

Thread Starter
I am just about to get a second 5870 to Crossfire. Is there anything I need to know about and do or can I just stick the thing in with the bridge and it will work? Is there a guide? The one I have now is an Asus and the new one is a Sapphire. My asus is over clocked will they both need to be running at stock speeds or the same speeds? (sorry for the noob questions I am stupid)

TIA

It should 'just work'. They will both run at the slower speed, unless you overclock the Sapphire to match the Asus.

1. Remove CCC drivers before put the second one in the system.
2. Put the second card in and Crossfire bridge connected to both card.
3. Reinstall latest Catalyst 11.9 + CAP (Catalyst Application Profile for Crossfire).
4. They can of different brand type and model of 5850/5870.
5. No need to sync the core/memory and voltages, they work fine with their own in Crossfire (we are talking about AMD cards).

Stupid is not the same as not knowing.

Basically you just put the card in and connect the bridge and power cables, then start up. CCC should say it's detected two cards and will ask you if you want to enable CFX.

If you run them at the same clocks, I doubt you'll encounter any problems. Start at stock, then overclock if performance is not good enough. Though I think your CPU will bottleneck you faster than these cards

Today I've even found out that NortQ sells decent PSUs. I was going to say you should check out another PSU, but it looks quite decent.

Yes it is an old CPU was thinking it may bottleneck this crossfire setup. It is running fine at 3.6 though will that help?

A CPU-bottleneck is not a big deal. It's just a reason to buy more

Like me upgrading my processor for my 6950s
You probably won't see perfect scaling, but I think it would be safe to say you'll at the very least see a measurable increase in performance.
