Unlocked Sapphire HD6950 Dirt3 Edition - Page 6

Okay, thank you ken1649 and Stuuut, I just don't want to be using the 6970 timings as some have experienced damaged cards from doing so, I just don't think the 2-4% performance increase is worth it for that. Having said that, if the card ships with a pre-loaded BIOS, then I've done nothing wrong by switching the BIOS because the manufacturer installed it themselves (am I right in thinking I could RMA a card that was damaged from a pre-loaded 6970 BIOS?), and if it does ship with an unlocked BIOS I'm using it - 2-4% performance increase FTW!
I think I'll just go for an OC that gets me on par with 6970 performance, which will keep me happy.

I would pressume you would still have warranty... i've mailed Sapphire asking about this.
I'm betting the 6970 timings wern't used on this pre-loaded bios and only the shaders where unlocked. But i don't know for sure, but why would they put a BIOS on it from factory that could damage the card?

my card just arrived!!!! i was able to unbox it and it had the bios switch its so tiny and hard to find lol! now i had to go to work but i have a couple questions to get me ready when i get home tonight

* can you sell the dirt 3 coupon? once i register my card can i sell the unlock code or will it be like locked specifically to that card
*should i leave the bios switch in the normal position or can i changed it to position 2 straight away and boot up windows with it to see if its unlocked or not. one in the second position what should i look for? how do i know if its truely unlock? if i see the shaders are 1500's should i just leave it and OC or flash it still?

if i dont see the shaders in the 1500's should i try to unlock by flashing still or just overclock it or return ? lol so confused. which drivers should i get now that the battlefield 3 beta is over o.o

lastly i have thermal paste from my hyper 212+ should i apply that tim or just let the card go with its stock paste

That I know of the DIRT3 / Deus Ex : HR / Shogun2 : TW COUPON Code's are in no way linked to your actual Graphics card ? Though, I have yet to load up and use the 2 coupon's I got myself, so I'm not 100% sure about this, but I've seen others sell the COUPON code, so you COULD if you want I guess, though it's suppose to be a fun game. wink.gif

As far as UNLOCKING the card ... the Sapphire TOXIC / Sapphire DIRT3 / MSI PE/OC TwinFrozrIII / and I guess ANY other card with the DUAL BIOS Switch makes it almost TOO easy, to at least attempt Un-Locking.

Step 1 - Install the card, turn on your computer and windows will most likely install the current driver before you can even install the CD software that came with the card.

Step 2 - You can install the CD software, but to be honest the WIN 7 driver the system auto loads for you should work too, so you could skip to Step 3 I guess ?

Step 3 - With things running, install GPU-Z and/or TriXX software or both ... then open the programs to review the Factory defaults of your card, note shaders and Core clocks etc.

Step 4 - In GPU-Z or TriXX SAVE your factory BIOS of the card. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. You might just need it in case something goes wrong and need to reinstall the factory BIOS file in case position #2 Unlocked BIOS FAILS, and flipping the switch back to position #1 won't reload the original BIOS for some reason. THIS shouldn't happen, but better SAFE and SAVED than sorry and SOL wink.gif

Step 5 - Shut Down Windows and turn off your Computer.

Step 6 - FLIP the little Dual BIOS switch near the back plate / SLI Bridge area to position #2.

Step 7 - Turn on Computer and reboot up.

Step 8 - Re-open TriXX and/or GPU-Z and check your Shaders ... if it's 1536, CONGRATS your card UNLOCKED and you have a HD-6970 now smile.gif no BIOS FLASH required it's ON the card from Sapphire ... if it's still 1408, Bummer dude no Factory Un-Lock frown.gif, you could still then try FLASHING it to Unlock it, but YES this can be slightly risky and CAN void your warranty if you BRICK the card by Flashing it, most likely you have a card that Will NOT unlock, remember it's NOT Guaranteed.

AND LASTLY about the Thermal Paste, DO NOT crack open your card to replace it unless A.) you KNOW what you're doing and B.) are Aware that in doing so you most likely just VOIDED your WARRANTY tongue.gif

Good Luck smile.gif

SapphireTOXICGPU-ZBEFORE.pngSapphireTOXICGPU-ZAFTER.png

NOTE: To SAVE your ORIGINAL BIOS, in TriXX you see the SAVE BIOS Button, in CPU-Z however you click on that little CHIP w/ GREEN lite on it looking thing to the far Right of the "BIOS VERSION" #.

Oh, one last thing ... I've seen A LOT of confusion about IF the DIRT3 card has the actual HD-6970 BIOS on it as the Position #2 option, or IF it simply has an HD-6950 BIOS w/ the Shaders UnLocked ...

Well in Re-reading these two reviews ...

Sapphire reckons that you should be able to flick the switch over and activate the extra cores, from 1,408 to 1,536, to make this TOXIC into a Radeon HD 6970-esque card.

Quote:
While Sapphire aren’t focusing on this aspect, the card ships with an ‘alternative’ bios, which may, or may not unlock extra shaders. The image above shows the bios switch. Simply turn off the computer, and change the position. Sapphire have already pre-programmed the bios for ‘unlocked shaders’, although there is a possibility it may not work on some cards from the production line. We can consider this an ‘extra’, rather than a selling point as this feature may not work on all cards.

I'd have to say IF the more expensive TOXIC edition card from Sapphire doesn't actually have a TRUE HD-6970 then neither would the less expensive Dirt3 card from Sapphire, I'm not going to speak about the other brands and what they may or may not have, as I don't know.
So to actually get HD-6970 performance from your STOCK DIRT3 cards (800MHz core, 1250Mhz Memory, 1408 Shaders), you need to BOTH get LUCKY and UN-LOCK it {1536 Shaders}, and then you need to Manually OVER-CLOCK it {880 Core/1375 Mem. clocks} to reach HD-6970 performance levels. The TOXIC edition card comes FACTORY overclocked & volted to 880 Core / 1300 Mem. clocks which is why IF you can get it Un-Locked {1536 Shaders}, it's already 99.9% on par with HD-6970 performance levels.

To actually have a TRUE HD-6970 BIOS on your cards, I think you need to do the HARD FLASH, flipping the Dual Bios switch doesn't perform this task ! though on the TOXIC card, all things considered, it's so close you would be kookoo.gif to risk bricking the card to try and FLASH it IMO, and the DIRT3 can be manually OC'd so I wouldn't suggest the FLASH on this card either, but that's only my 2cents.gif on the subject tongue.gif

Flip the switch, put it in the PCIe slot, plug the power, turn PC on. That's it.

Both can do the job but only use one of them, not both. If you are not familiar with Afterburner, easier to use Trixx.

I gave you a STEP by STEP Guide ... you do not have to remove the card to flip the switch ?

WRONG, do not do this, install the card with it in position #1 and SAVE the factory BIOS to a file first BEFORE you try booting up the system/card with the switch in Positon #2.
