upgrade from 6870??????

Thread Starter
I have been throwing around the idea of upgrading from my 6870 this holiday season. I do plan on a new psu as well.

The goal is playing BF3 at the highest settings with the best possible frame rates. This is going to be on a 23 inch monitor at 1080p.

However money is a factor here, so this would be a best bang for the buck deal.

Would adding another 6870 be smart? Or saving up for say a gtx 580 be the better option. I do worry that stuffing two 6870's in my antec 900 case would create heat issues for the enitre system. The case does have two 120 intake fans on the front, one 120 intake fan on the side, one outbound 120 fan on the back, and of course the outbound big boy fan on the top.

2 6870s is what im running as we speak and playing BF3 Beta dont know if there are some video options that they didnt let out with the beta but i doubt it everything looks like its there, and im running everything on ultra easily. Only thing I would worry about as you said is that you have a smaller case so I might create heat issues. I have the Antec 1200 and my top card get to about 70-75c and the bottom is at about 60-65c while playing. Both are on stock cooling. (although im seriously considering on getting a after market cooler for the top/main card. Also remember that the top card will have to not only deal with its own heat but the heat the rises up from the bottom card.

Hope I was able to help any.

its a give and take situation, the cf 6870 is especially if overclocked a better performance then a single 580gtx, but at the same time your looking at a great increase in all around temps on your rig. The 580 will require you to drop out one of the hdd bays, you could still use the fan by just simply mounting it with just the plastic brace and front covers, been there, done that... i think for your budget you would be better off with a 6870 as it would increase your performance quiet a bit, if you plan on going into higher grid's, id grab a 570 and sli it, or 580sli.

yup and ive stated on another thread that I don't trust CCC so I always manual control my fan speeds and those temps that I listed in the earlier post is with the Main GPU fan at 90% and the Second one at 80%. So even with my Antex 1200 I have those temps with the fans that high. imo over all case temp is your main concern atm if u get another 6870. Maybe a after market cooler on the main card could help? if you have the space/back slots
