Just another headphone suggestions thread.

Hi guys, please read my needs carefully and give me some good feedback.

I'm looking for a gaming headphones, preferably wireless that does not use USB audio. I would like 5.1 or 7.1 audio, as I play quite a few FPS games. I also listen to a wide variety of music from artists like daft punk, drake, linkin park, mgmt, the beatles, beck...you get the idea. I'm sort of eclectic.

Wireless vs Wired is not a major selling point to me. While I would enjoy wireless freedom at home, having a wired headset would mean I could use it with my future iphone.

If I get wireless, I would use it only with my computer and wouldn't mind having a microphone. If wired, I would use both home and traveling and do not want a mic. I don't voice chat now but may get into it if I have a mic.

I'm kind of torn, and feel like I need to buy two pairs of headphones:
Wireless for gaming at home and a wired headset (or buds) for listening to music from my phone.

Should I look into soundcards also? I'm currently using the onboard from my sabertooth 990fx, and I've heard good things about it but have nothing to compare it to.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I can get these for 75, worth picking up as my commuting headphones? I don't think they are good for gaming but how about for music?

If you're commuting, get in-ears.

If you don't mind open cans without a ton of bass, I would say AD700s would be perfect for you.

for the commute or for gaming? I'm looking to spend about 150ish...200 max. Thats for a single pair, if I get two (one for travel one for games) I'll spend more.

edit: I commute via NYC subway, so the less sound leaking through the better. It's damn noisy on the trains!

Ah, gotcha. Yeah my suggestion would be for the gaming. Open-air cans would be terrible on the subway.

are these the ad700's you're talking about? They don't seem to be 5.1 or 7.1...bad for gaming?

Yes, those are them.

5.1/7.1 headphones are a gimmick. Seriously. Ask the audiophiles around here what they think of that.

AD700s are amazing with both games and music.

Open headphones leak a lot of sound, but have wide soundstage which is good for gaming.

Generally, 2 channel headphones sound better than 5.1 or 7.1 as the drivers in them tend to be better developed from major brands so better sq, while 5.1 and 7.1 more crappy drivers are crammed in them. Example, razer or logitech doesn't spend much on developing headphone drivers, but sennheiser would since they are into audio specific products.

Onboard vs Sound card is huge difference. You should look into getting a cheap soundcard also, since the sq difference between cards is negligible.
