Asus is still releasing bios for my board, but none of them are providing any kind of performance increase clock for clock. They improve stability and increase OC potential or lower vcore required for the same clocks though.
Awe, if this was the Bulldozer Blog you might get infracted for that. Some hard core censorship going on there.

When coming out with a new cpu lineup you don't purposefully make yourself or product look bad.

I'd also not be surprised if the AGESA code injects the CPU's microcode at startup. If so, AMD would have a lot of options to fix problems. This would go a long way toward explaining the poor results being leaked if the latest AGESA code was not available to the general public yet.

I haven't noticed but were any of the leaks from someone who claims to have the BD press kit? I would expect those to include the latest software AMD had at the time they were shipped out.

For real, I mean I hope its good, but we have seen leak after leak and they have all sucked. At least a couple of them have to be real.

AMD really has nothing to gain by doing that. I mean, it would be pretty funny but I am sure they have seen all the negitive press and I doubt they would let all of it fly just to essentially "zing" its customers.

The only "zing" would be the 5% of buyers who goto forums like OCN and Intel. Very very much worth it.

At least someone here is smart enough to realize these are unofficial, whether they are realistic or not.

There was a picture of a LinX run at 40GFLOPs, most of the cores had a max load temp of ~35c but one had one of ~55c, I think there *may* be a BIOS issue in getting either Turbo or CnQ to dynamically clock the CPU properly.

Phenom II still is a capable performer, whether BD is a fail or not.

They can talk to their partners and say "Look, give reviewers a BIOS to fix bugs a, b and c, but don't release into the wild until after NDA is lifted."

BD is only really competition for the server range, Intel wouldn't drop prices on enthusiast parts even if BD destroyed them, and for 99% of the consumer range Llano and Bobcat are destoying all.

You should see what they did to keep Eyefinity secret until release so nVidia couldn't release a competitor until the last minute.

The board companies would have had to have the AGESA for awhile though, because AMD doesn't provide bios, just a code to put into the bios...

Seems like it would be counterproductive to board manufacturers and AMD themselves not to provide their best AGESA for testing purposes.

That would mean ASUS and everyone else has been releasing bios updates with old or purposefully gimped AGESA code, while having the proper code. Was this the same code and gimped bios used to reach 8.4GHz?
I would think the manufacturers would have a separate NDA on their BIOS releases (So they get basic BD support before launch, but proper support after launch) but a beta/unreleased BIOS was on those boards with the press kit, assuming it's true.

And I don't think the proper code makes a difference for CPU clocks, just performance. My E8300 still hit 3.6Ghz (Board limitation) on a board that didn't support it, but was noticeably slower than the P43 I got later on at the same clock speeds.

It at the very least adds proper support for new CPUs, I had to get an AGESA code update for my motherboard to run Thuban CPUs properly.

Keep in mind first and foremost BD is a server chip, not sure when it launches there but enthusiasts essentially get rebranded server stuff with a new chipset these days.
