AMD Bulldozer questions

Dear overclock.net community,

I am thinking to get one of the upcoming AMD Bulldozer FX CPU's but I still have a couple of questions. After looking a bit around I found that this might be the best place to ask.

My main question is: Will my Thermaltake FRIO cpu cooler fit / be compatible with an AM3+ CPU? Based on the specifications on Thermaltake's website it supports AM3 CPU's but will it work on a Bulldozer FX AM3+ ?

Another question I have is related to the motherboard. I am still undecided on which one to purchase based on the fact that I have some concerns on whether or not the Thermaltake Frio will fit onto it. (due to built in components on the motherboards)

My possible candidates are:
  • ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX SOCKET AM3+
  • GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD7
  • GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5
What would you suggest? Some advise would be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Peter

Hello Peter and welcome to Overclock.net forums.

If your cooler supports AM3 then it'll definitely support AM3+, because those two sockets are basically the same in design. The only difference between AM3 and AM3+ is that AM3+ has one more pin added. So AM3 has 941 pins, AM3+ has 942 pins.

I'd go for GA-990FXA-UD5 because of the layout of the board. It has very nice PCI-e layout I've ever seen.

Hi Benz and thank you very much for the warm welcome and your expertise.

I am glad to hear that I will be able to keep / use my Thermaltake Frio on the new CPU.

Regarding the motherboard: I like the UD5 as well - but I still have some concern about the built in 8+2 Ultra Phase Power / Mosfet's Design and the "Ultra Durable". They seems to be pretty close and "tall" - do you really think I will be able to fit the FRIO in without touching any of these components?

Please have a look at this reference image:

Thank you very much and have a nice day,
Peter

I'm pretty sure it won't touch the VRM heatsink or the NB heatsink yes.
