GPU/Ram upgrade, help me spend my cash

Thread Starter
so I have around $200 bills to spend on my lowly sig rig in order to gear up for BF3 and the Sc2 expansion next year.

I am floating around ideas, searching for uber inexpensive 6870, 6950, 560 and 560ti's currently.

would it be better for me to get a decent 6870 and upgrade to 8gb ram (1333 MHz), or spend it all on a low end 6950/560/560ti. where am I going to see the bigger difference, 4-8GB or 6870-6950?

Thanks.

Both of those would probably be minimal difference; but if you go from a 1gb 6870 to a 6950 2gb, I suppose you could see a little difference.

my biggest concern is eliminating a bottleneck on my system, whether it be GPU or RAM... i dont think the cpu will have an issue with most games.

I don't see how you could have any bottleneck unless you go with like a gtx 590 or 6990.

With ram, 4 gigs is fine for any game at the moment, and probably will be for at least 6 months to a year.

I'd just keep your 4 gigs of ram, and upgrade to the 6950 2gb or 560 ti 2gb. (If it's in your budget) If not, a 6870 will be fine, and you can upgrade to the 8 gigs too.

You'll need all the GPU horsepower you can get for BF3. The beta has my 560 Ti pegged all the time.

So right now I would suggest you get the fastest video card you can find.

Later on you can add more RAM. You always have the option of replacing one stick at a time, so you go from 4GB to 6GB to 8GB. A 4GB stick only costs $25.

thanks for the tips... i will see if i can squeeze out a few dollars more and make the most of my cash.

there is just a gaping chasm in price between the 6870 and the 6950.

I didn't think they made a $200 bill...

Also I haven't played the beta, but I would think that you would benefit more from a higher end gfx card than more ram.

This card has a $30 mail in rebate right now which will bring the price down to $240 and it comes with dirt 3:

I went from a XFX 6870 Black Edition to a non-reference XFX 6970. Even with just one of my 6970's, the performance increase was very noticeable. I'd bet the same will hold true with the 6950 also.

Go 6850, or a used 6870 on the OCN marketplace. For a cheaper alternative I was able to purchase a 5870 on the OCN marketplace for ~$180...performance would be greater than a 6870 as a single card solution.

You may not be able to get the ultra settings, but the 6870 will be able to run BF3 at pretty decent settings with good FPS. If you don't have the money for a 6950, it's not the end of the world, a 6870 is a good card.
