Manually Overclocking

Thread Starter
hi everyone. I've been overclocking my pc(not my sig rig) with my motherboards autotuning but would like to try doing it manually which I've heard is much better. I have an amd 955be, asus m5a97 mobo, 8gb gskill ram, xigmatek gaia cooler and a pny gtx 460 gpu. I believe for basic overclocking you just need to raise the multiplier and one other thing but would like advice on what to do before I mess with anything I'm not familiar with. I would like to get up to 4ghz if possible. when I use my mobo's autotuning and set it to extreme @ 3.9ghz, I get unstable when testing with prime95. I know these cpu's can do 4ghz with stock cooling so maybe overclocking the whole system is too much. all help totally appreciated.

Set the multiplier and cpu bus speed to get 4004 Mhz. Then set the ram under stock clocks. Then raise the voltage until stable.

how do I set the ram under stock clocks? I've never adjusted the ram before so not sure where you adjust it. is it in the bios when you're adjusting the others?

Under 'jumpfire settings' change the DRAM or memory settings (whichever is in the BIOS) to manual, lower the RAM clocks, Lower the CPU multiplier and start pushing the FSB up bit by bit. That will ensure a higher and more stable OC.

I can't find the jumpfire setting. I'm in the asus ai suite in the turbov evo settings and everything is there but the jumpfire. I also couldn't find it in the main bios so maybe I don't have it?

^ I've never heard of a 'jumpfire' setting

Nor have I ever seen that option on any motherboard i have used.

I just raised the cpu bus/peg frequency from 200mhz to 204 and I raised the multiplier from 16x to 18x = 3672mhz. I ran 3dmark vantage and the scores were higher. my first score at stock speeds was 13309 with the cpu score at 10769 and the gpu at 14445. after I bumped it up my cpu score was 12203 and the gpu score went up to 14547. is there anything else I should be adjusting that would make things better? my cpu voltage is 1.40, cpu/nb voltage is 1.0 and dram voltage is at 1.65. I'd like to get to 4ghz if possible but want to be careful.

ok I just gave up on manual overclocking for now. don't have time to play with everything today so I just used my turbo evo on my mobo and set it at 3.7+ and am running prime95. everything seems good so far but I'm going to run it a while longer and see if everything stays stable. my cpu temp isn't going past 50c. the turbo evo has set my bus at 232, voltage 1.45. nb volage at 1.15, dram at 1.50, vcore at 1.416, vdda 2.5, nb ht voltage at 1.2, sb at 1.1 and nb 1.8 voltage at 1.8. does this all sound ok?
