New keyboard (up to about £40 budget)

Hey, I need a new keyboard for general use from typing to playing games and willing to spend up to about £40.

Requirements are:

good quality

nice to type on

lit up keys as I want to be able to use it in the dark

I don't think I want one with the low profile keys as I don't like typing on laptop keyboards

not really bothered if it's wired or wireless

Anybody have any recommendations for good makes/models?

I thought this one seemed like it might be ok but I don't think I want one with fixed wrist rest thing like that:

Thanks

I actually hate the look of that lol. But it might be the wrist thing that makes it look so bad to me and I'd probably remove that.

The wrist rest on the X4 works pretty well actually. In fact it is needed because that is where Microsoft have hidden the LEDs for the fancy lighting

I think if you pop to PC World, you could get the X4 for about £25. I'm in a similar position to you actually and I'm also looking for a similar keyboard. Given your budget though I've only found these options:

Logitech G110 - Full height backlit keys, maybe a bit flimsy in terms of build quality from what I've read, backlight comes in blue and red and shades in between.

Microsoft X4 - Medium height backlit keys, but no blue backlight. Very good build quality

If you want further options available to you with a backlight my findings have shown prices to pretty much start from £50 and work their way up quite considerably.

I'm still trying to find a backlit keyboard I like.

There is a Merc Stealth keyboard which I've found around £40-50, but this is quite large.

At around £50-£60 you can buy a Logitech wired board with a white backlight, but this has flat-ish keys, and for £80 they have a wireless option, again with flat keys.

Personally as I can't seem to find a keyboard other than an X4 that I can say I like. I'm likely to go for the X4 and buy some blue LEDs and mod the board myself.

I saw the logitech illuminated one, it's only 9.4mm thick and has the low profile keys that I don't like, otherwise I would've considered it as it looks nice, but yeah it's also expensive, too much really.

I'm also going to go for the X4, it definitely seems like the best option at that price, and personally I like the orange (or red or whatever it is, orange would like nicer than red), the only thing I'm unsure about is that wrist rest but I guess I'll have to get used to that. When I type i don't have my wrists down so it's no problem, but when I'm playing games I do.

Ahh right, if you can stretch your budget by £10 I suggest the keyboard im currently typing on, it also has Back-lit keys! I haven't had any complaints the 6 months ive owned it

I thought the Arvo did have backlit keys...the reason I didn't include that in my shortlist was the fact it consolidated the arrow keys with the numberpad which is a big no no in my books...

As Mark-20 suggested, the G110 is looking like a keyboard I would consider, but it is slightly above your budget.
In fact I would have ordered that keyboard until I saw a video (which I can't find right now), which did indicate there is an substantial element of flex to the keyboard when you press down in the space between the F-keys and the USB hub at top of the keyboard.

I then considered the X4 because I know first hand that the build quality is good and it is quite pleasant to type on.

To clarify the X4 does have orange/red backlighting as opposed to blood-red backlighting seen in the Alienware Tactx keyboard and considering it is one of the cheaper keyboards with a proper anti-ghosting system as opposed to the WASD cluster anti ghosting makes it an appealing prospect.

If I find any other boards, that are in the price range you mentioned I will post them up. In fact I'm subbing to this thread to keep tabs on anything people might suggest

Now that I can get that Sidewinder X4 for £25 and there aren't many alternatives, I don't really want to spend £40 or £50 on one anymore as I haven't really seen anything better than it for that price. If I saw something that does look better than the X4 for ~£40 I'd still consider it but there's nothing else so far that has the features I want. The X4 is still my top choice so far and I will probably be ordering it tomorrow. I looked at that logitech G one but have read the build quality isn't great and it's not that nice to type on.
