So my boss bought me a new computer.....

Here's the cpuz for it.

It is an i7 but she got me the 2600 instead of 2600k so I can't overclock it. It's at 3.4 so my question is should I stick with smp or try for some -bigadv? The computer will probably be used around 6 hrs a day, some imaging but mostly messing with excel files and stuff. Also, I have a cheap Radeon 6450 in it. Are they overclockable, or even worth overclocking? As far as cooling, all it has is a stock heatsink and a rear exhaust fan in a standard small dell case (Optiplex 790). I've been doing some smp just to see how the temps are looking and the highest core has maxed out at 71C, with ambient temps around 20-22c. Tell me what you think and if you have any other suggestions on what I should do with this new toy let me know.

If i were you. I would take the processor home and switch it Unless there is a good motherboard i'd switch it and the boss would never suspect a thing. Profit? FREE Then you can overclock it Unless that system is YOURS if your boss got it for just you.

I wouldn't bother overclocking the 6450 but it's fine for watching movies on and some games on low settings. Also, it's a very "green" card, uses like close to no electricity

I like the way you think but the computer was bought just for my use, no one else will be using it. I'm not even sure why she got me an i7, i was surprised myself when I got it. About 32% into my first WU on this thing and I'm getting a 3:07 TPF and 16800 PPD so that sounds about right for 3.4 Ghz.

Is it a custom built computer? If I'm assuming correctly you have some prebuilt case with maybe a 92mm fan in the back and stock HSF. You should not be overclocking that thing anyways. 72 degrees is really hot for stock clocks too.

Are you even suppose to be folding at work?

I'd test -bigadv if it's unused for 18h/day and just light usage the other 6h. 16k is roughly what I got with my main computer on SMP, using it for normal light usage browsing, listening to music watch a movie now and again etc. And switching to -bigadv gives me about 25kPPD and the current WU is predicted to finish with ~37h to spare.

And make sure you install the client in a Linux@VM, gives much better performance.
