as of right now i'm still not too sure what DTS and DDLs are lol.. will look that up later tho

TOSLINK and SPDIF connectors are bandwidth limited to 2-channel stereo in PCM mode (the windows' default since Vista). Hence ALL media NOT recorded in a Dolby codec a la DTS or DD (like DVDs are)...will only be sent to your receiver in 2-channel stereo. This means you NEED a receiver that can LFE on its own to use a subwoofer at all...it also means you will NOT be able to enjoy surround sound in games that support it using your onboard digital connections.

DTS and DD are simply ways of cramming 5.1+ channels on TOSLINK and SPDIF connectors.

I think if you have DTS-Connect as an output format in the speakers tab and select it you have what you need, it's been a while since I've had a Realteck onboard but IIRC that's how it was.

Pretty sure the rx-a800 uses a decent burr brown dac. I would easily say that it is as good most sound cards in the 100-200 dollar range.

I used an rx-v863 as my audio source for my pc for over a year and it sounded as good as my xonar stx. The only issue with them is that they tap power for the front headphone jack from the main l/r channels and cant really drive some of the harder to drive headphones all that well.

It would still be far better than the onboard realtek dac. I would just do what you plan and run the toslink optical out to the receiver and call it a day.

I see.. So does that mean if i get a sound card that supports DTS and DD through digital out then i will be able to get surround sound? in movies and games?

Also.. the yamaha actually supports LFE, although i don't have a sub yet.. but it's a good thing for the future..

and by the way.. it's actually a rx-v800 instead of a800... i had it wrong the whole time lol..

DVDs and BluRay movies already have bitstreamed audio. So your onboard SPDIF/TOSLINK will switch to DTS or DD just fine and you should be able to do surround on those media automatically fine, so long as you select the correct audio track and settings in your software player.

The problem is Windows assumes it should do PCM mode, unless the audio is pre-bitstreamed...so things like games will not be surround. You also will only be able to get your subwoofer to do anything playing music with LFE on your receiver.

I see.. that sucks haha.. because i rarely watch any movies on my computer.. if i were to hit surround, it will be for games only..

also.. did u meant that if i were to get a sub.. will it only work for music, and movies.. but not for games?

What you system as stated will do is this:

1) For all DVD/BD bitstreamed audio, your computer will switch to DTS or DD mode on the SPDIF connection...and you'll get surround sound as on the disc so long as you select the correct audio track/settings in your software movie player

or

2) For non-bitstreamed audio, your machine will *only* send 2-channel stereo output. Since your receiver has LFE, you should be able to get bass on most things including games...however it will all be calculated by the receiver. If a game has/has a dedicated subwoofer (or surround) track, you won't get it...due to bandwidth limitation of the TOSLINK/SPDIF and windows always defaulting to PCM mode. Not all games do surround sound, for example Fallout3/NewVegas does, but Mass Effect 1 does not.

In my setup I have to still use a $200 sound card (my D2X), to live-encode everything to DTS or DD...and I am not using any of the fancy DAC abilities which is why it is so expensive-which I offload to my A/V receiver. But my receiver is 10 years old, and I don't recall it having adjustable LFE.
