Overclocking Phenom II x4 955 without CPU coolers?

Thread Starter
hey guys, I want to be able to overclock a Phenom II x4 955 CPU without buying extra CPU coolers.

At least an overclock to about 3.7 GHz would be good.

Would it be OK to overclock to that much on this case?

Not a chance.
The 955 loads up close to the max temp you want to go even when overclocking.

You are free to try, and ill gladly eat my words if you succeed.
But when you burn out your processor and it starts to degrade dont blame me.

Seriously though.
You cant swing $30 for a hyper 212+?
That will get you there easily.

Could you link me to one on Newegg?

It may be cheaper elsewhere though.

You MIGHT be able to get 3.4GHz out of the stock cooler. But I wouldnt do that even if you can because the AMD coolers eat dust like mad and you will have to clean it constantly to not redline your processor.

Thanks, should one be enough to overclock without problems?

Oh yeah.
If you can grab another 120mm fan for it you will be even better off.

Its not a high end cooler, so dont expect MASSIVE overclocking, but its a good budget cooler and you should get to 3.6+ without much trouble at all.

If you're in Canada, the Corsair A50 goes on sale for $20. Just saying.

^ Really?
I could manage 3.7Ghz on the stock cooler, within temperatures, on a 140W x4 965.

AMD's 125W stock cooler actually has a lot of headroom for OC.

There are heatsink choices that are better than the Hyper 212+ for less, or at a worthwhile premium. Look into Sunbeam coolers with 120MM fans on Newegg. The Twister 120 is one I usually recommend over the 212+.

Wow.
Im eating my words now.
I never had that kind of luck.

Did you crank the fan way up or something?
Though...I am in Arizona...so every cooler sucks. X(
