also HD 3870 has very poor AA performance and suffers from bad old drivers from amd

a standard 9800 GT is core: 600Mhz, shader: 1500Mhz, Memory: 1800Mhz 256bit GDDR3

the one that you linked is clocked core: 550Mhz, shader 1375Mhz, Memory: 1800Mhz 256bit GDDR3 and it is 1GB!

its a no brainer to use the 9800GT EE because it is faster, has more memory, consumes less power, has Physx and most importantly has better drivers
Again, you're comparing a stock 3870 to a stock 9800GT. This is the EE model 9800GT, its a lot slower, and it very likely won't even hit vanilla speeds due to lack of power.

The HD3870 will be able to overclock (most 3870's did quite well actually). And he wouldn't be limited to old drivers. Even the latest AMD drivers still support the HD3870. The only cards they don't support are the X1k series and older anymore.

its not true that it is alot slower because it use the same memory technology GDDR3 and has the same bus width 256bit that could hamper the performance significantly

also PNY Nvidia 9800Gt EE XLR8 1024mb easily hits the standard 9800GT clocks

i personally have HD 4850 and HD 4870 x2 and the drivers compared to nvidia is no where near as good

also the feature where you can change individual settings for different applications or games on Nvidia Control Panel is extremely handy especially if you are running old games and want it to look better

also you can use it for things like video encoding or accelerating Adobe CS5, etc...
