BSOD 124 - Could this mean too MUCH vcore?

I just recently have been going about 4-6 hours lately on Prime95 and getting BSOD 124 and I've always assumes "NEED MORE VCORE!". Well I read that quick guide to BSOD and it said for BSOD 124 "raise/lower vcore". So now I'm interested. I've always thought I had a vcore hungry chip and have been running at high vcore to get it to even boot.

Well I guess my question is...

If the computer DOESN'T boot, obviously more vcore/voltage somewhere, right?

But if the computer boots and runs prime 95 at lets say 1.4 volts, but you can actually boot and run prime95 at 1.35 volts could the 1.4 volts be giving you BSOD 124?

Let me go over my stats atm.

4.7 GHz
1.450 volts
Ran Prime95 for about 4 hours and BSOD

Now I'm trying
4.7 GHz
1.430 volts
and it seems to be working atm... I'm not sure, it seems like I've been running my voltage maybe too high and thats why I'm unstable? Is this a possibility?

Maybe I could go lower then 1.430.

The reason I tested this is that at 4.8 GHz I could NOT go any lower then 1.465 volts to even get it to boot. I got a BSOD 124 after about 4 hours, so I immediately thought "need more vcore because I'm running the minimum to boot and I can't go lower so I have to go higher", but going higher was out of reach for me because of my cooling. My temps were reaching 82*C+ at 4.8 and I couldn't afford to go higher voltage, so I dropped to 4.7 GHz.

I ran it on 1.450 volts at 4.7 to give it a decent amount of voltage and I thought it would be more then enough for 4.7 considering 4.8 was running at 1.465 volts. But I got BSOD 124 on that voltage. And I know that jumping from even 100 MHz is quite a significant voltage increase. So I think that maybe I gave it too much voltage at 4.7, hopefully now at 1.430 and possibly lower I could get some stability...

Let me know what you guys think? am I just crazy or could this be the answer?

EDIT: I can run 4.5 GHz at 1.36 voltage pretty damn stable, so I assume 4.6 GHz at around 1.4 volts, and hopefully 4.7 GHz at around 1.43 volts, and 4.8 GHz at around 1.465 volts. Seems logical to me?

I'm curious as well. Although honestly, I doubt it. Usually too much vcore won't hurt anything other than temperatures. If you end up being correct though, looks like I'll be shooting for that magic 5.0 again. wheee.gif

Ya testing atm, at around 30 mins of Prime95. Seems that if I dropped it from 1.450 to 1.430 it wouldn't last this long considering I BSOD at a higher voltage because .020 is kinda significant.

I really hope that I'm right because my temps are looking reaaaallllyyy sexy atm!!! biggrin.gif:drunken:

My voltage even dips to 1.424 which makes me feel like my theory is right... I really think it woulda crashed by now.

Good luck with that. You do have a good cooling setup for it.

I hope so too. Those former voltages do seem a bit on the high side, for 4.7. As I mentioned, I don't want to go beyond 1.400v. for 4.7 and a 12 hr. P95 run.
But I'm almost at 1.400v. now, it failed again at 1.390v. after about 5 hrs.
If it fails at 1.400v., I may just give-up on running P95 beyond an hour or two!

I got BSOD 124..... rofl. Nvm that idea hahahahaha

I dunno this really confused/pisses me off. Its so hard to overclock AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! i hate it i feel like its pretty stable at like 4-5-6 hours then crashes!@ frown.gif

EDIT: My voltages are so freaking high compared to everyone else at my level. I either have a super voltage hungry chip or like I'm doing something completely wrong....... I dunno anymore, i dunno why I have to keep running at such high voltages. 4.7 GHz @ 1.460 volts here I come! frown.gif :'(

Trying lowering your PLL voltage. wink.gif I'm running 1.50v PLL right now for the clocks in my sig. With default 1.80v PLL, I needed almost 1.50v vcore for 4.8GHz.

O god that could very well be the issue. Mine is on auto and I think its like around 1.8something or other.

Too much vcore probably isn't likely. Only thing I know is keeping RAM and VTT/QPI within .5v with my i7 920 as I've read that it would kill the RAM if not. Otherwise you're expected to keep bumping the voltage up until you finally hit stability or tweaking any other setting that may be the culprit. The results of not being able to get stable after a severe bump in voltage would mean you have hit the wall on your overclock...basically you'd have to get a better cooling solution with the very high voltages you start requiring. That is unless you don't want to begin degrading the chip from the rumored 'safe' voltage region. I'm guessing that the next step would be people hitting up extreme cooling with DICE, LN2, etc. Then you start realizing how addicted you've become with overclocking smile.gif

I know not the same skt, but I found with my qx6700 that trying to get stable at 3.6GHz took less voltage when I got bsod's.
When I got a bsod I upped the voltage, kept getting bsod's quicker. lowered the voltage and hit a point I would have been stable if not for temps(I could do every thing except prime95 and ibt). cpu started to throttle to stay below 85* but would not bsod under p95 and ibt load.
