$1600 Gaming Rig Review Please!

Thread Starter
Hey guys, first time poster. My friend recommended that I get my build reviewed here and get some questions answered. Looking forward to posting here! I've lurked for a bit, and this seems like cool place ^^

Anyways, here it is, my proposed ~$1600-1700 gaming rig.

CPU: i5-2500k
GPU: Dual MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 2GB SLI
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz
Case: Antec 900
Motherboard: MSI P67-GD65
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB
HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB 64MB 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair AX850 850W GOLD
Cooling: Corsair H70

As for the DVD drive, I'll just take the old one from my old rig.

What do you guys think? Any tweaks you would like to make?

Also, are there any obvious bottlenecks you see? Do you think 1866MHz RAM is necessary? I was thinking maybe I was wasting money on faster RAM, but I don't know much about it. I also got the MSI motherboard because its cheaper and I've heard good things about that one in particular.

Thanks in advance for your replies! ^^

Hello Goobus88 and welcome to Overclock.net forums

Change your board to Asus, Gigabyte or Asrock. The other stuff seems fine to me.
But personally I'd wait for Bulldozer, and then decide. Only 3 days remaining.

You can settle for a WD green for $30 or so less. Or get a 2TB for about the same. H70 is a waste of time really. Get a cheaper air cooler if you want to save a little in that department. I like Corsair and all but I am unimpressed with my H60even though it was about $60. Everything else seems great. you can save some money on getting a lower end PSU like a HX750 or something. It should still handle two twin frozers. I don't like the antec cases. My preference though. Nice computer.
PS Shop around Newegg isn't the cheapest game in town.

Thanks for the replies guys

Benz - which mobo would you recommend? I've heard good things about the Asus P8P67 PRO, but I've found two of them, the P8P67 and the P8P67-M. What's the difference? Also, do you think they will come out with an AMD CPU in the same price range as the 2500k?

Buttermilk - I've heard there are better cases than Antecs, but I'm a sucker for the design and LED lights I'm actually not buying in the States, but in Hong Kong. The prices should be pretty similar, unless you have knowledge in the area!

Now that you say a 750W can handle twin Frozr's, I can actually save a bunch of money in that department and get a slightly better motherboard. I'm just worried it won't quite be enough, though, since I do plan to try overclocking both GPUs and CPU.

As for the cooler, are there any air coolers that you would recommend? Liquid cooling just seems sexy haha, but if I can save a few bucks going with air cooling while having similar performance, I wouldn't mind considering the option.

I think I'll get a green instead of a black, like you suggested. a 7200RPM storage drive just doesn't seem too useful, especially if I have a SSD for games and OS.

Here are a few suggestions that I can make on some alternatives:

Fractal Design Arc Midi Black High Performance PC Computer Case w/ USB 3.0

Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s

2X MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB

CORSAIR Professional Series HX750

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)(the red doesn't match the color scheme but they're dirt cheap and fast!)

ASUS SABERTOOTH P67 (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz

Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler

Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I almost exclusively build with ASUS motherboards. I use some MSI though. I have a set of 5870's running off of a HX750 right now overclocked almost to 900Mhz with a dual core AMD stock. I run it 24 7 mining BTC and It holds up fine. So I don't think you'll have too much trouble with power that way. The D14 will clear your RAM and get the door on with this case but it may take a little patience. Also it will be a little cramped in general but definitely a powerhouse for the price.

BTW The P8P67-M is a micro atx.

If you can help (afford) it, get rid of the SLI idea all together and just get a GTX 580.

You don't really need the 560 Ti 2GB. Ditch them for 2 6950s. Same price, much faster. Also you could probably get a cheaper 850W like the HX850 or a Seasonic model or something. Do you really need gold efficiency?

NO dont get a slow green drive, your wd black is perfect. Also i love my H-70 it gives my 4.0ghz overclock really good temps. I also like the ease of install, and the looks.

I would change the motherboard, the asus pro has a great rep for overclocking bang for buck around here.

Cooler change to a Noctua D14, Motherboard an Asus Model. I also recommend a single 580 over your SLI selection.

Asus P8P67 PRO is a great board, the main difference between Asus P8P67 PRO and Asus P8P67 is, that you can do only 2x Crossfire or SLI on Asus P8P67, but on Asus P8P67 PRO you can do 3x Crossfire SLI. The P8P67-M is mini ATX and has less VRMs than the other two.

As for the AMD FX CPUs, they'll cost less than the 2500K. Also we don't know the actual performance on the new AMD FX CPUs. Everything you saw on the web regarding Bulldozer performance, don't believe anything that they're saying.
