I7 950 built or i7 2600k Built (NO OVERCLOCK)

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I am looking into get a new PC but cannot decide which one - i7 950 or i7 2600k - I do not want to go for overclock. I want to go for a gaming PC where I can play latest games. And I am looking for long run pc as well.

Also I would like to know if I get 2600k and do not overclock do i still need cpu cooling fan? like arctic 7?

What built should I get and what else should be included in it. eg. how much ram, how many fans which graphic card etc. please advise I would greatly appreciate this.

Also my budget is £500.

Thanks
go for the 2600k all the way. 20% better than the i7 950.

Also, if you are game ronly, why don't you go with the 2500k? the 2600 and 2500 are getting exact same performance in game... I this 8GB of RAM won't be useless and you must get a grea case, not a bucnh of useless fan but a couple isn't bad. For your cpu cooler, how much do you want to spend on it? more you put, better temp you would get.

If you do not want to overclock ( r0fl ) why do you ask for a heatsink? stick with the crappy intel stock cooler and get worsetemp you could ever get and do not overclock at all. Thats not what we do here but anyway it's your choice to waste a great cpu..

Well if you want it mainly for games get a i5 2500 if you don't want to OC. It will be cheaper.

The K at the end of the number means the CPU can be OC'd. You can get the same CPU for less if you get the model without the K

I also don't think you can build a i5/7 PC on a £500 budget that will be able to play games without bottlenecking.

I will give it ago at building one anyway.

EDIT: Do you need anything else like keyboard, mouse, screen, speakers, case etc.?

if your budget is £500 and plan to go with a i5/i7 FULL build, my bet is that you are going to end up with a very unbalanced build. I would definitely go with an i3 2100, really makes hardly any difference in most games and get a decent GPU (GTX 460- dun expect to go max at 1080p), a 500W PSU and a decent airflow case(probably the most futureproof part of a build). RAM (4Gb for this budget). Get a parts list with component costs out for us to take a look and recommend where you can do better.

if it is for gaming i would suggest getting the i5 2500k as it is the same as the i7 for gaming. the i7 has hyper threading which is only really used in video encoding ect. if you are not going to overclock then the arctic 7 would be fine, i have it an the hottest ive seen mine is around 55.
i think your budget will be near impossible if u plan spending the 250 on the i7 2500k lol
also if your not overclocking get the non k version and save a few quid.
Ram
for gaming you only really need 4gb at the moment but with ram being so cheap you can pick up 8gb for around 45quid nowdays
graphics card
this really depends on what games you want to play.
motherboard
as you do not plan on overclocking i would suggest you go for a h series of motherboard as they are much cheaper.
power supply
for a singe graphics card system i would suggest a 500w power supply

i will give you a list of possible items on my next post (after your suggestions)

With the 2500k at $150-$175 how can you go wrong. If you live near a micro center, get the 2500k, they also have a I7-960 for $199.

If you dont live near a micro center, get a 2500 non k or a 2400 great fast quad cores 4 gaming.

I would go with 8gb of ram for a SB build, and a gtx 560 or better.(IMO)

Get an i5. You can use stock heatsink but you can buy aftermarket one if you want it to be truly quiet.

£500 pound is a short budget, I suggest you go with a i5 2500k, also you wont be able to have a decent graphic card if you go with as i5 2500k, you need atleast 1k if you want all your components reflexing eachother in performance.
