Yes, this is true, but I do expect better optimization in the final game as well.

Specially when it comes to CF and SLI.

Run it on high and run it on ultra and it looks the same, all the proof you need.

Explain why i get a huge performance dip when i change it to ultra.
i also run out of vram in ultra and get frequent stutters.

Same here, try running on both high and ultra and check the fps. The fps are the same, which it should not be. I'm getting 20-25 fps outdoor now with my 5750......my GPU upgrade is in the mail.

Some of the "Ultra" settings are there. Namely particle effects and some post processing.

I'm starting to wonder if a card with more vram will do better than a 1.5gb 580. I think GTX 580's with 3gb vram are going to be winners here but a 1.5gb 580 vs. a 2gb 6970 with this game is going to be interesting.

Go search through the official BF3 thread, it's mentioned there approximately 1000 times.

I really wish I could get a definitive answer on this before I buy. I'm wondering if a 2gb 6970 crossfire would do better than 1028mb 570 SLI, where the SLI is faster but the crossfire has more memory.

I know there have been talks about hitting VRAM walls.

I think the 2 gtx580s recommendation was for a 2560x1600 resolution. nVidias webpage says 1 580 is good enough for 1080p.

I have a 1gb 6950 (unlocked) and a 2gb 6970. Whatever the highest settings in the Beta are now, my 1gb card definitely seems to be hitting that wall. The 6970 and 580 seem to be having similar performance, though the 6970 may be benefiting from more Vram.. It's too close to call really.

*Running 1920x1200.
