Framerate in Battlefield 3/ Upgrade question

Thread Starter
So My system is as follows:
  1. Core2duo E8400 OC'd to 3.6Ghz
  2. 2Gb 800mhz RAM (OCZ Reaper brand)
  3. one EVGA GTX 460 1Gb

Now, the problem is that in caspian border map i am getting pretty low FPS, it ranges from like 16-35 but its usually like at around 25 on high (1680 x 1050 resolution)(I use FRAPS). Is there something that is bottlecking my card? Also, i realize i have little RAM and an aging CPU, but how much of a difference can you guys say it will be if I get an i5 2500K, and 8Gb of RAM to replace my current CPU/RAM?

Thanks!

You're CPU limited by your dual-core...and 2 GB or RAM? Well, your system is really aging...time to retire it if you consider games such as BF3....

BF3 is really geared towards quad-core CPUs...BFBC2 was the same...
A 2500K overclocked a little and 8GB (RAM is cheap) would help a lot...while you're at it, grab another 460 1GB!!!!

which resolution are you running?

Seeing as BF3 is eating up 1.6GB of ram and pegging my quad core CPU at 100% on Caspian Border, I think the E8400 and 2gb needs to go.

I haven't tried that map, but I did try the other one. My frame rate was a fair bit higher than yours on many occasions... but it also dropped too wildly, and the fluctuations were too numerous and large. The CPU is bottlenecking it. I didn't drop below 30FPS very often (and when it did, it wasn't by much), so it might not sound too bad, but as I said, the fluctuations were too large and too common, going from 50FPS-60FPS+ down to ~30FPS at times.

I'd say the fastest dual core CPUs are a realistic minimum for this game, and really, the rule of thumb you keep hearing echoed is right in my opinion; you want a fast quad core CPU for this game.

The GPU should be fine to carry over for now. With a Sandy Bridge Core i5 or better, and even 4GB RAM, it'll make a world of difference.

You need
1. any quad core intel cpu (Dependent for any Battlefield game)
2. at least 4-6gb ram for BF3 (very ram consuming)
3. A 64 bit OS

Everything else you have is just fine. Just overclock the GPU a little if you follow my suggestions afterwards.

Its definitely the CPU. Unlocked my phenom x2 into an x3(4th core is faulty) and i already see a big improvement. Settings on high no AA @1600 x 900. Im running 2 gigs of ram as well. im getting 30-60 fps. Never Dips below 30. Imagine if you get an i5 and lots of ram. The performance will likely skyrocket.
