Athlon II x3 455 -> Phenom II x4 B55

Hi guys, I was playing with the UEFI bios on Asus M5A97 (stock version) with an Athlon II x3 455 on the board and enabled the unlock core feature. So I read all I could on the internet but nobody unlocks these processors since people prefer Phenoms (because of the L3 cache I guess). Also I can't find any thoughts or experiences on the that UEFI Bios of my Asus MB.Anyway I ran prime95 for like 2 hours and system is stable but I'm not happy with the temperatures. If you can give me some pointers or share some experience on the voltages on stock speed of Athlon II x3 455 (3,3 GHz stock) unlocking I'd be grateful. Or thoughts about the things I can change in the Asus UEFI Bios. Here are some screen shots at idle before and after (as you can see the temperatures are double ).

TL: DR: Check the screens and tell me your opinion, kind Sirs.

your Asus M5A97 looks to have good cooling for vrm/mosfet and supports 125 cpus so you wont have any trouble with the unlocked phenom as long as you keep it under 60c.
Athlon x3 455 gets very hot on full load so you should buy a good cooler like hyper212+ if you plan on keeping it unlocked.

I have an athlon 455 unlocked and was actually looking at that Asus M5A97 board to replace my current one since its $40 cheaper than 990fx and also supports bulldozer.

What temps did you get after running prime95 for 2 hours?

71 degrees Celsius on the cores I know, I know it's too much but not only it's all stock hardware but I also left Cool'n'Quiet on, Q-Fan control, auto voltage on and everything else by default.

My idea was to check how good that 1 click feature "Enable hidden core" actually is.

Can you please tell me at what voltage your B55 operates ? Also the temperatures with your current cooling I wonder also what settings you keep in the Bios. Thank you man, you are a gentleman and a scholar!

Hmm, what are your ambient temps? What case/cooling? I would try coretemp, sometimes unlocking causes problems with the temp sensor.
This is my X3 at 22c ambient with a Xigmatek Gaia and 2 fans.

As a dual I'm currently at 1.35v for 3.6 or 3.7ghz...I forget, out of town atm.

My board had 1.42, 1.45, or some such as it's default though. I managed to get 3.9ghz as a quad with it. Haven't ever tried pushing further. At the time I had the stock cooler on it and only just upgraded to an aftermarket cooler before I left town.

: edit :
Mine was extremely finicky about changes to the fsb. I did have junk ram in it at the time though...so maybe it was that. *shrug*

: edit of the edit :
This was a Phenom II 555BE

Well without the 4th core (no matter which of them i disable 0,1,2 or 3) - 24-28 degrees idle (depending on the room temperature). But goes double when the 4 cores are enabled. I don't know if 1,368 (1,375) Core Voltage is the good stuff at 125W TDP for B55 though.

That's odd. I don't really remember mine changing any significant amount...let alone doubling. Guess I have something to test when I get home!

That all depends on the 4th core. If it's bad it will never boot, but if it is marginal it may take more vcore to unlock, or it may unlock at lower speeds, or you may have a faulty core that unlocks but runs too hot. What I am saying is you need to verify the chip is actually running that hot when unlocked, or the sensor gets bugged. If it runs that hot, you might just leave it an X3 and overclock it. My guess is the sensor is wrong because it doesn't matter which core you disable/enable.

Thanks for the pointers, man. I think I won't risk it and will just oc it. I just tried it with my other cooler and I was able to drop 10 degrees off it but I'm not willing to sacrifice a good cooler for this processor. Still when I got more free time I'd try to play with the settings manually a bit to see if underclocking speed or multiplier might lead to better temperatures (which I doubt).
