So its been a year, skipping SB era for sure that was my original plan.

Now its time to upgrade, but this time its for the purpose of future proofing. Now which platform is good for this? Now I dont know if I should just wait for IB or just go for SB-E, it seems SB-E is power hungry and my power supply may not be sufficient at all. BTW will IB be considered enthusiast level since its an 1155 socket? Since people say 1155 is aimed for modest users and 2011 for enthusiast.

Well, SB-E is expensive. Wait for Ivy Bridge, the IB isn't just a die shrink of the SB, has some new features, and interesting ones.
I am in the same situation like you, have a intel i5 750 bought back in 2010, and i skip the SB on purpose, to wait for IB. I am building a new rig, with a IB and a Kepler.

Well, about the enthusiast level, your question.

Well take it like this, eg: the nvidia GTX400 series are on Fermi, and the GTX500 series are also on Fermi, it's just a upgrade, nothing to special.
Same with the Ivy Bridge. It's just a upgrade from the Sandy Bridge, with improvements, obvious. The same architecture, but a 2.0 upgrade from a 1.0 version.

The 1155 is still the "performance" setting, while the 2011 is the enthusiast platform, and the most hotter, and power consumption, it's for overclockers, not for games.

The 1155 is for gaming. A 3700K Ivy Bridge( i think this is the top name of the IB, and i think will be as the same price when the 2600k was released, so price will be ok) with a 4.5 overclock should be enough for any game out there, and in the future.

After reading most of this thread; I still cannot figure out which one is aimed where...?

I'm in the F@H/Gamer category; so I'm a little bit confused at which would be better... the SB-E looks better because of the 6/12 core/threads; but I'm unsure about the rest... any ideas?

Man, all of you are using their rigs on hardcore render/CAD/3D Max/ and stuff like that ?

I don't think so, almost of you are gaming.

SB-E is very expensive, CPU+MOBO. You easily pass 1000$ just for a decent mobo and a SB-E + a decent cooler or a decent water cooling. This is very expensive.

I suggest waiting for IB. The price will be almost the same as the 2600K when he was released. A IB clocked at 5ghz is more than enough for every game out there, and render programs, folding, etc.

Of course, if the user is a overclocker, and he is passionate in breaking the records, or just to satisfy the "midgets" in his head, buying the best rig, just to show off, and he doesn't uses it on hardcore stuff, well buy SB-E.

I am still getting the SB-E. Gonna freeze it on my sub par phase change, benchmark and game with it. When Ivy comes out then maybe ill switch over. By then I hope to have a better Cooler Express phase change. I love my I7 970 but I pretty much hit a wall with it and im ready to try something new for benchmarking.
