Still quad, though less dim slots. Its like having a dual channel ram mb with two slots only. A few of the X79 mb are designed like this.

Or overclocking oriented boards like the Gigabyte UD7.

Does anybody have info on the physical dimensions of the boards? I'm mainly concerned with the length of the board...dont think my TJ07 could fit anything longer than an ATX board. I could do just about any width, but the length on some of the boards appears to be a bit longer than just ATX.

Most boards are still retaining the ATX form factor.

No problem glad it helped you learn something!

I've come to the conclusion that Intel decided to use a dumbed-down Patsburg-A* rather than Patsburg-D like they were going to at first... I imagine this is due to time constraints. eVGA's SR3 has a server-style SAS arrangement on it, however, leading me to think they're actually going to hold out for a completed Patsburg-D or possibly even Patsburg-T in order to launch that; a good indicator that they won't is if those SAS ports vanish on the final board, and it launches before Q2 next year.

*Patsburg-A has 4 SATA 6Gbps, many final board revisions only display 2 connected to the chipset, hence "dumbed-down"; any more SATA ports than this appear to be provided by ASMedia or Marvell controllers, with the SR3 so far being the only exception to this (reason already stated).

Only a few "low end" boards have had "only" 4 slots so far. What are you doing that you need more than 16-32GB of RAM?
