So, if each "limited unlocked" chip can reach 4.78 on high end air, LCS, or Full loop, then intel will have a winner.

I Wonder what voltages will look like. I don't think that every chip will be able to meet that OC, so if the chip isn't stable @ that clock, where does that leave the people that bought it to OC?

I am bewildered @ Intel's Marketing strategy towards enthusiasts.

EDIT: if I'm missing something, please educate me in a non-trolling manor .

I don't think it will be sold as running at those clocks but has the possibility to do those clocks, with a voltage bump of course.

According to Anandtech:

The quad-core offering will be a “limited unlockâ€. The roadmap states that the limited unlock will allow up to six bins of overclocking above the maximum Turbo frequencies.
Meaning that the "limited unlocked" i7 3820 would probably have up to the 45x multiplier available (six bins above the max turbo multiplier of 39x).

Also, the BCLK options will be 100, 125, and 166 MHz.

Thank you . Can't wait till these are lauched for all the juicy details.

Can you link the source for the bolded? Or am I blind and missed it in the anand article?

So, if I understand correctly, OC options are 47x multi and the listed BCLK freq?

Sure! Note that the max 3820 multi is probably 45x and not 47x. At IDF overclocked Sandy Bridge-E and presented some slides on the subject of baseclock overclocking. BitTech has an article on it. This might also be discussed in the first couple posts of this thread.

Well, I don't think it's a good sign that the 3930K and 3960X were listed in Intel's Material Declaration Data Sheet database today, but the 3820 wasn't.

There are engineering samples (QXXX Spec Codes) in that database based on a four core "Sandy Bridge EP-4" die. Presumably the 3820 is based on that die and not the eight core "Sandy Bridge EP-8" die like the 3930K and 3960X. It may be that the four core die wasn't put into volume production at the same time as the eight core die. It's plausible that they're waiting for the C2 stepping.

Its also interesting that there are two spec codes listed for each of the two CPUs. SR0H9 and SR0GW were previously revealed by CPU-World to be C1 stepping versions of the 3960X and 3930K. It makes sense that SR0KY and SR0KF are the C2 stepping versions of the 3930K and 3960X.

EDIT: 100th Post!

about 4 core sbe OCability - i remember reading a while ago that it wont feature the blck multiplier like the other SBE cpus and will only OC by multi which will be locked at some point.

on a side note - why on earth would anybody get an expensive lga 2011 mother board just to put 4 cores in it?
