Hey guys, got a question for you, is it worth upgrading to sandy bridge right now? I've got an old 775 platform and was wondering if i should wait for ivy ( march, more like april/may in my country). I'm not doing any video editing nor extreme overclocking besides 10-20% doesn't seem like that much and i could probably get a gen3 board. Looking forward to your input, thank you.

Depends on your finances and what the reviews say. Next week the reviews will start showing up and that should help you evaluate whether its worth it.

This platform is for "enthusiasts" or people who need serious computing power. If your just an average user and dont use your computer for your living, a Sandybridge-E system will likely be an overkill for you.

Well i'm using it for programming, a bit of gaming and lots of movies, guess sb-e is out of the question. What about SB now vs IB in 6-7 months? Are the gains that high to wait until then or should i be fine with a decent sb pc now and upgrade to an Ib proc later. I doubt Sb will start being the bottleneck for at least another 2 years in most apps though. Thanks for the fast answer btw.

If Intel does it correctly it aint 6-7 months.
Its more like 4 months... Im considering my self on getting an IB i7, hopefully with this new die shrink and other improvements we can reach the 5Ghz barrier easier and go beyond it for those who can

Ya you're right, especially when not all motherboards support it, like it's the case for the X58 platform.

but you still can't use VT-d to map a GPU to a VM can you ?

i just got a i5 2500k...microcenter deal was too good to pass (i5 + great mobo for $250)...i figure if IB is really much better (can't wait for benchmarks!), i can just sell the i5 and replace it with IB..no need to get new mobo..i don't think i need those new mobo features...

also if there are any other delays/possible bugs...the i5 2500k can hold me over quite nicely...i was debating whether to wait for IB or not..but i need a new pc up and running before Guild Wars 2 is released...bf3 also needed help.

btw..Sandy Bridge-E is crazy stupid unless you are filthy rich and love to waste money imo (no offensive to anyone buying it). It would makes more sense if you are a video editors/programmer that needs more cores for work...but really bad bang for buck i think...

The only one that is a reasonable price is i7-3820...which will cost like $300...and is not unlockable...arg. def. passing that.
