So I just received my 6850 and am trying to figure this out. If I have it installed to my motherboard can i just use the hdmi cable on the back of the mobo or do i have to hook it up to the graphics card? If I hook it up to the graphics card will I lose sound?

Integrated HD audio controller

Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI or DisplayPort with no additional cables required
Basically the graphics card has its own sound card, you might have to set it as the default device in windows to output from it.

Sorry mate I miss read that.

Maybe I worded my question wrong, let me rephrase it. If I have the hdmi cable plugged into my mother board will I be using the 6850 GPU for my display and for games?

If you have Virtu installed and have it configured to do this, yes.

Lol i think you still worded it wrong. Your gpu will be used for games if its used for the display...

Anyway let me try and help.

HDMI from a video card will carry video and sound. When you plug in your video card and have it running through HDMI to a monitor that receives sound through HDMI you will have the speakers on that monitor running with sound.

In the windows sound options at bottom right, when you click on show output devices, you will see the onboard sound card as well as the video card. Which ever one is active will be the one running the sound.

So lets say you have a headset, and you want to use it instead of the HDMI on the video card. You need to disable the video card sound output and enable the onboard sound card as the default.

I do this all the time and I find it kinda nice that I can just switch on and off. To watch movies on my computer with my tv I just enable the HDMI for sound. When Im playing games with my friends I use the sound card to my headset.

No. If the HDMI is in your motherboard, your onboard GPU will be displaying everything.
