"Disk Not Ready" when Trying to Initialize

Thread Starter
So I am having a few problems with some external HDD. First thing is first, all this is done on Windows 7. My friend is trying to get some data off an old HDD from his laptop and I thought I could help by using a docking station. Well when I plug it in it tells me my device is ready to use. But it doesn't show up in My Computer. So I went to Disk Management and see that it says it needs to be initialized. Either initialization types MBR or GPT I choose it comes up with an error window that says "Disk Is not Ready". And I can't do anything. I have tried all my USB ports and see no problem with the ports in Device Manager. This happens to multiple HDDs. As far as Disk Management I see : Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized(with a down arrow), and where there is suppose to be a white box on the right, it is greyed out. Please, ANY help will be much appreciated.

You may have to connect the drive internally. Not all docking stations work with all drives - especially true when the drive is dying.

Initializing the drive wipes out the partition table, so you'd then have to use tools like Recuva or TestDisk or something to recover the data. I'd connect it internally first to see what happens. (Does it lockup your PC, indicating the drive is pooched? Does it stop your computer from POSTing? Or does it work okay?)

I have just found out that this HDD was from an external casing. Which to me means that it would not have a bootable OS or anyway to actually get it up and running. I only have a laptop to work off, so my capabilities of just adding the HDD into my tower is not there. Also I have a WD 1TB USB3.0 external that I haven't done anything with but right out of the box it gives me the same issue. Thanks and hope this helps:rolleyes:biggrin.gif:o
